The year 2026 is expected to be politically crucial as several states are set to go to the polls. The results of these elections will not only influence regional politics but could also have a significant impact on national political dynamics. On Sunday, March 15, the Election Commission announced the election schedule for Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Puducherry, West Bengal and Assam. According to the schedule announced by the Election Commission of India (ECI), the first phase of polling will take place on April 9, while the final phase of voting will be held on April 29. The counting of votes and declaration of results will take place on May 4. Click here to view the detailed election schedule.

These elections are expected to witness intense contests between ruling parties and opposition alliances. The BJP will attempt to expand its political base in southern and northeastern India, while the Congress and several regional parties such as the DMK, TMC and CPM will rely on their strong grassroots networks and regional issues. Key issues such as economic conditions, inflation, employment, education and Centre–state relations could dominate the political agenda during these elections.

West Bengal and Tamil Nadu are likely to attract the most national attention. In West Bengal, Mamata Banerjee’s TMC will aim to retain power, while the BJP will attempt to improve on its previous electoral performance. In Tamil Nadu, the performance of the DMK government and the efforts of the AIADMK will make the contest particularly interesting. In Kerala, the traditional rivalry between the ruling Left Front government and the Congress-led UDF will continue, while in Assam the BJP government could once again face challenges related to regional political equations and citizenship-related issues.

Overall, the 2026 Assembly elections will not only determine the political landscape of these states but could also play an important role in shaping the national political narrative and opposition strategies ahead of the 2029 general elections.
