Actor Bhumi Pednekar has reacted with shock and concern after a nine-year-old Dalit girl was allegedly gang-raped by two minor boys in Uttar Pradesh’s Ballia district. Expressing her anguish over the incident, the actor shared a note on social media questioning the environment children are growing up in and called the case a reflection of a “broken society”.

According to police, the alleged incident took place in the Haldi area of Ballia district and involved two minor boys from the victim’s village. The case comes amid growing public concern over recent incidents related to violence against women and children across the country.

Bhumi reposted details related to the case and wrote on her Instagram Story, “Please read! A 9 year old girl was sexually assaulted by a 11 year old and a 12 year old (sic).”

Reacting further, the actor added, “What the hell is going on! How are we not alarmed and ashamed at what we're doing with our children. To me both the little girl and the boys are victims of a broken society (sic)."

This is not the first time Bhumi has spoken out against incidents involving violence and harassment against women. A few days ago, the actor had also expressed outrage over a viral video showing man making obscene gestures towards a woman’s wall painting.

Expressing concern over the growing pattern of such behaviour, she had written, “This is the mentality of our youth. These are the same people who are going to sexually assault children and women. We are in a pandemic. Just words and showing shame isn't enough. Stricter laws, stricter laws, stricter laws (sic).”
