Vijay's Jana Nayagan new release date out after 5-month wait?

C Joseph Vijay was sworn in as the Tamil Nadu Chief Minister earlier this month in a ceremony attended by his family and hundreds of supporters. Even as he begins his new political role, his final film as an actor, Jana Nayagan, has remained in limbo for five months after getting stuck in the certification process with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).

The latest development is that the film’s release date has been updated on some ticketing platforms, though there has been no official announcement from the makers. On District, Jana Nayagan is listed for release on June 19, while on Book My Show, the release date has been updated to June.

So far, KVN Productions has not issued any statement confirming the film’s release date. Producer Venkat K Narayana of KVN Productions addressed the media after he was spotted at a temple on Friday evening, but said the team was still waiting for the censor certificate, as reported by Hindustan Times.

He said, "This is not the place to talk about Jana Nayagan. I came for temple darshan. But as I said, we’re waiting for the certificate to come. I am sure that they’re going to give it anytime soon. We’ll release at the earliest."

"This is not the place to talk about anything else, thank you. I came here to take God’s blessings. The release date will be (announced) as soon as we get censor certificate. We’ll announce it well in advance once the censor certificate is in our hands. And we’ll release it in a grand way throughout the world," the producer added.

Jana Nayagan, directed by H Vinoth, has been billed as Vijay’s final film as an actor. It was originally scheduled to release in theatres on January 9, but that did not happen after the CBFC did not certify it in time. The film also stars Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde and Bobby Deol.

Reports indicate that the film was first screened for the CBFC examining committee in December 2025. The committee reportedly suggested several cuts and indicated that the film could receive a U/A certificate once those changes were made. The producers are said to have accepted the recommendations and resubmitted the film.

However, the process was delayed further after complaints about certain scenes led to the film being referred to a revising committee. The prolonged certification process is reported to have affected the film’s release plans, international schedules and distribution agreements. Vijay has since alleged ‘conspiracy’ over the film’s delay, blaming the then-ruling parties for it. He also alleged that news about his personal life was deliberately leaked closer to the elections.

In April, several scenes from Jana Nayagan were leaked online amid the prolonged wait for its theatrical release. HD prints of the full film were uploaded to piracy sites. The leak, which came just before Vijay’s entry into politics with the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections, rattled the Tamil film industry. The police have made 9 arrests in the case so far.

For now, the film’s release remains unconfirmed despite the updates on ticketing websites. Until the censor certificate is issued and an official announcement is made, Jana Nayagan continues to await a release after months of delay.
