Sukhendu Sekhar Roy

Sukhendu Sekhar Roy is one of the most experienced parliamentarians from West Bengal and was the Trinamool Congress's longest-serving member in the Rajya Sabha before resigning from both the Upper House and the party on June 8, 2026 amid an unprecedented political crisis in the state.

Born on April 5, 1949, in English Bazar in Malda district, Roy received his education at Kalindri High School, St. Paul's College, Rabindra Bharati University and Calcutta University. He holds Master's and Bachelor of Laws degrees and built a successful legal career before entering active politics.

Known for his expertise in constitutional and legal matters, Roy emerged as one of the Trinamool Congress's key strategists in Parliament. He represented West Bengal in the Rajya Sabha and served as the party's chief whip in the Upper House, playing a crucial role in coordinating the party's legislative agenda and parliamentary interventions.

Roy was considered one of Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's trusted lieutenants and was closely associated with the Trinamool Congress during its rise as the dominant political force in West Bengal. As one of the party's senior-most leaders in Delhi, he frequently represented the TMC on national political issues and was known for his sharp legal arguments and articulate speeches in Parliament.

Apart from politics, Roy has maintained a long association with the legal profession. His parliamentary career was marked by active participation in debates on constitutional issues, federalism, governance and legislation affecting the states.

With decades of experience in public life, Roy remains one of the most recognisable parliamentary figures to emerge from West Bengal's contemporary political landscape.
