Delhi CM visits building collapse site, orders action on all illegal buildings
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the Saket building collapse site on Sunday and ordered a criminal case, a magisterial inquiry, and action against unauthorised constructions and responsible officials.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Sunday visited the site of the building collapse near Saket Metro station in south Delhi and ordered a criminal case and a magisterial inquiry into the incident.
Four people died, and rescue teams pulled eight others out of the debris after a three-storey commercial building collapsed on Saturday.
Following the chief minister's directions, the police registered an FIR at Mehrauli Police Station. The government also ordered a magisterial inquiry under the supervision of the South District Magistrate.
During her visit, Gupta reviewed the ongoing relief and rescue operations and directed officials to provide all necessary assistance to those affected by the collapse.
Local residents told the chief minister that more people could still be trapped under the debris. Gupta said the concerned agencies were carrying out search operations carefully.
Residents also raised concerns about rampant unauthorised construction and inadequate safety measures in several buildings in the area.
"Action will be taken against all unauthorised buildings and the officers responsible for them," Gupta said.
The chief minister directed officials to inspect dilapidated and hazardous buildings in the vicinity and take strict action wherever necessary.
According to a statement posted by the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) Delhi on X, rescue teams have remained engaged in operations since Saturday night. The statement said authorities took prompt action on the chief minister's instructions, leading to the registration of a criminal case at Mehrauli Police Station and the ordering of a magisterial inquiry under the leadership of the District Magistrate of South District.
The CMO also said Gupta ordered strict action against all unauthorised buildings and directed authorities to take action against officials responsible in the concerned departments.
Delhi Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu said in a post on X that multi-agency search and rescue operations were continuing. He added that authorities had issued instructions to ensure all necessary medical assistance and immediate relief for those affected.
Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood said all agencies were conducting rescue operations on an urgent footing and working in close coordination to safely evacuate anyone trapped and provide immediate assistance to affected families.
"Every available resource has been deployed, and efforts are continuing without interruption," Sood said.
He added that the administration was closely monitoring the situation and remained committed to providing timely relief, support and all necessary assistance.
