An illegal consignment of the anti-diabetic drug Mounjaro, suspected to be spurious and worth around Rs 70 lakh, was seized in Haryana's Gurugram, with two people arrested in connection with the case, officials said on Sunday.

The joint operation was carried out by the Drug Control Department and Gurugram Police, who arrested the alleged mastermind, identified as Amish Sharma, along with another accused. The accused were allegedly preparing the injections at a flat in Sector 69.

According to officials, Mounjaro, an imported drug used for diabetes management, has recently seen rising demand among affluent users for weight loss, fuelling a parallel illegal market.

Officials said the consignment was being sourced via Delhi's Bhagirath Palace and was meant to be supplied to upscale locations, including the Galleria Market area in Gurugram. Acting on specific inputs, authorities intercepted the consignment before it could be distributed.

Drug Control Department official Amandeep Chauhan said they had received intelligence about the arrival of a Mounjaro consignment in the city. "With the help of local police, we arrested one accused and seized a large quantity of the drug. During enquiry, it was found that he works for a company that is not licensed to sell this drug," he said.

Chauhan added that the volume of the seized stock raised strong suspicion about its authenticity. "The original injection requires storage at 2 to 8 degrees Celsius, but the recovered stock was being handled without any such standards, indicating it could be spurious," he said.

Officials said further investigation is underway to identify other members of the network and trace the scale of distribution of the suspected fake injections.
