Protests erupted outside a private school in Kolkata after a Class 3 student of Maharishi Vidyamandir died on Sunday after battling for life in a coma.

The boy’s family accused the school of negligence, alleging that his condition worsened due to the lack of timely medical assistance on the school premises during class hours. The school management denied the allegations.

According to the eight-year-old victim’s father, Ashis Kumar Nath, who spoke to India Today, the incident took place on May 13 during school hours. He alleged that the child had informed his class teacher that he was feeling unwell and wanted to go home, but was denied permission and instead asked to keep his head down on the desk.

The father claimed the child remained in that position until school dispersal around 11:50 am despite the extreme heat. He further alleged that there was no fan in the classroom area and that the child was not provided any medical assistance.

According to the family, the victim was later asked to leave for home on his own. While walking down the stairs carrying his school bag, he allegedly collapsed and suffered a serious head injury.

The victim was first taken to two private hospitals near the EM Bypass before being shifted to SSKM Hospital, where he remained in a coma until his death on Sunday morning.

Following the child’s death, the family filed a written complaint at Netajinagar Police Station accusing the school of negligence and failing to provide basic first aid.

The incident triggered protests outside the school on Tuesday, with parents demanding accountability from the management.

Three people have been detained by Kolkata Police in connection with the incident. The school has also been sealed for investigation purposes.

Those detained include Pragya Sahu Choudhary, the class teacher; Shaktipada Jana, head of the school management; and Sushmita Chakraborty, the principal of the school.

According to police sources, investigators are examining all evidence related to the case and have begun reviewing CCTV footage from the school premises.

The school management denied any wrongdoing. A member of the managing committee termed the family’s allegations “baseless” and claimed the student may have fallen ill due to the heat. The school also maintained that primary treatment was administered as soon as the child complained of discomfort.
