India records new high of 4.14 lakh Covid-19 cases

India on Friday recorded a new high of 4,14,188 new Covid-19 cases, taking the caseload to 2,14,91,598, according to the Union Health Ministry, amid growing calls from several quarters for a national lockdown.

Health ministry numbers showed 3,915 deaths were reported in the past 24 hours, taking the overall toll to 2,34,083. However, 1,76,12,351 Covid-19 patients have recovered, with India's active caseload at 36,45,164.

These five states account for 49.55 per cent of the new cases, with Maharashtra alone responsible for 15.02 per cent of the fresh infections. Maximum casualties were reported in Maharashtra (853), followed by Uttar Pradesh (350).
