UGC Chairperson Vineet Joshi reveals how NEP is changing Indian universities

At the India Today Education Conclave 2026, UGC Chairperson Vineet Joshi outlined the strides India has made in higher education under the National Education Policy (NEP). He highlighted growth in institutions, student enrollment, female participation, and research output, alongside a shift in focus from job-seeking to job-creating graduates. 

UGC Chairperson emphasised innovation hubs, research parks, and AI initiatives as key drivers of India’s education transformation. Addressing regulatory concerns, he clarified that proposed reforms aim to enhance institutional autonomy, transparency, and coordination, not centralisation. 

Mentorship programs, flexible learning, and mental health support are being strengthened to bridge learning gaps and reduce student stress. Entrance exam reforms and oversight of coaching centers are underway to ensure fairness. Overall, Joshi painted a picture of a dynamic, evolving higher education system, where innovation, technology, and collaboration are shaping the future of Indian universities.
