The cancellation of NEET UG 2026 has left lakhs of medical aspirants facing uncertainty, added expenses and emotional stress. What began as allegations of a paper leak has now turned into a wider concern about the impact of repeated exam disruptions on students and their families.

The National Testing Agency (NTA) cancelled the NEET UG 2026 examination, which was held on May 3, after allegations of a paper leak surfaced. A re-examination has now been announced, but many students say they are the ones paying the price for failures in the system.

For several students, the exam process did not end after May 3. Many had returned to their hometowns after completing the test, believing their preparation phase was over. But after the cancellation announcement, they had to return once again to cities where they had been preparing for the exam.

This has created a fresh financial burden. Students now have to arrange accommodation again, manage food and transport costs, and continue coaching for another one to one-and-a-half months.

Medical entrance preparation already costs many families between Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs 3 lakh. With the re-exam, those expenses have increased further.

Students struggle with new expenses

Kartika, a NEET aspirant from Khurai in Madhya Pradesh’s Sagar district, had been preparing in Bhopal for the last two years while staying in a hostel. After the exam, she returned home, but had to come back following the cancellation.

By the time she returned, her hostel room had already been given to another student. She is now living in a rented flat costing Rs 15,000 per month.

Her coaching centre is also farther away now, forcing her to travel daily by bus. Earlier, hostel mess facilities covered her meals, but now she has to cook on her own.

“I am under a lot of mental pressure right now, and I have to prepare for the exam all over again,” Kartika said.

Priya, another NEET student from Khandwa, said the re-exam has placed her family under financial stress. She has been preparing in Bhopal for two years.

Her father, who works as a painter, had taken a loan to pay for coaching and living expenses. Now, the family must once again arrange money for rent, food and study costs.

Priya fears that financial problems may affect her dream of becoming a doctor.

Coaching centres say preparation remains intact

Coaching institutes say students are still academically prepared because the exam took place only days ago.

Amit Gupta, a NEET coaching operator, said no extra coaching fee would be charged from students appearing for the re-exam.

However, he said accommodation has become a major problem because rooms vacated by students after the exam were quickly occupied by others.

Hostel operators also said rooms in cities like Bhopal are usually rented immediately because students and working professionals continuously move into the city.

Questions over trust in the system

The controversy has once again raised questions over the credibility of the examination system.

Allegations of NEET paper leaks have surfaced twice in the last three years. Students and parents say confidence in the NTA is weakening.

Many students argue that if authorities cannot secure the examination process, students should not have to suffer repeated financial and emotional losses.

For lakhs of aspirants, the challenge is no longer limited to cracking a competitive exam. Many now feel they are also fighting uncertainty within the system itself.
