Polling is under way today in 25 of the 26 Lok Sabha seats in Gujarat. As per poll officials, a total of 4.97 crore people are eligible to vote in 50,788 polling booths in the single-phase Lok Sabha elections in the state.
Interestingly, Jambur, also known as Gujarat’s ‘mini-African’ village, is home to nearly 5,000 people and 1,500 voters, and has a special polling booth set up.
A video shows people of Jambur dressed in traditional attire as they dance joyously on their way to the polling booth, to exercise the fundamental right to vote.
A community of African origin, this Siddi community is believed to be associated with the Nawab of Junagadh who brought them from Africa.
