The series traces the making of a criminal identity through the lens of culture, systems and visibility. From student politics and music to ideology and media amplification, it pieces together how aspiration, power and perception intersect to shape a new-age digital syndicate. Using Bishnoi as a central case study, the narrative expands beyond the individual to examine the larger cultural and social context, with a focus on consequences.
Director Raghav Darr said, "Lawrence of Punjab was always envisioned as more than just a crime story. Our intent was to understand the ‘why’ behind the making of such identities: the environment, the influences, and the systems that shape them."
"At the same time, it was equally important to reflect on what these journeys leave behind. Through this series, we’ve tried to present a narrative that is both informative and deeply human," he added.
Who is Lawrence Bishnoi?
Lawrence Bishnoi is a notorious Indian gangster who rose to prominence from student politics in Chandigarh to become a key figure in organised crime across Punjab, Rajasthan and Haryana. Born in 1992 in Punjab’s Ferozepur district, he heads the
Bishnoi gang, known for its involvement in extortion, smuggling and violent crimes, with a network spanning multiple states. He drew national attention in 2018 for openly threatening actor Salman Khan over the blackbuck poaching case, and has since been implicated in several murders, kidnappings and extortion cases, often operating his criminal network from behind bars.
Lawrence of Punjab will premiere on April 27 exclusively on Hindi ZEE5.
