Fact Check: Cockroach Janta Party fans cause violence? All these videos are OLD
India Today Fact Check found that all five clips are old and are related to factory workers' protests in Noida in April this year.
A viral political satire movement called the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), founded by former Aam Aadmi Party political strategist Abhijeet Dipke, has gained tens of millions of followers in just about a week. On its Instagram page, Dipke shared a story on May 23, saying he had not issued any calls for protest and requesting all followers to be “careful and peaceful”.
Meanwhile, several videos of violent protests, vandalism and arson have been going viral. Allegedly, these clips showed young followers of the Cockroach Janta Party creating chaos.
Sharing the videos, an X user wrote, “BREAKING – Cockroach Party. Gen Z protesters clash near Army offices as anger against Modi regime grows.”
All of these clips predate the formation of the satirical political movement. Let’s examine the videos:
CLIP OF THE BREAKING FENCE
One clip shows a large crowd gathered on the road and a man attempting to break a fence on a wall. Reverse-searching the clip's keyframes led us to the same footage posted by an X user on April 13. The user stated that the video showed workers protesting in Noida for wage hikes. The news outlet Bharat24 posted the same video on Instagram on April 13, stating the same. This proves that the video is unrelated to the CJP.
PROTESTERS TURNING POLICE VEHICLE UPSIDE DOWN
A reverse image search of this clip led us to video reports by ABP Uncut and ETV Bharat published on April 13. These reports contained several visuals of vandalism, including protestors turning a police vehicle upside down. According to both news outlets, the visuals were from the worker protests in Noida.
ETV Bharat reported that workers from multiple companies staged protests in Noida and Greater Noida in Uttar Pradesh, demanding salary hikes. The protest led to incidents of vandalism, stone-pelting and arson.
This also proves that the video is not related to the CJP.
THE OTHER THREE CLIPS
A reverse image search of the clip showing vehicles on fire led us to the same footage shared on X, Instagram and YouTube on April 13. All three posts stated that the visual was from the workers' protest in Noida.
Reverse-searching keyframes from the remaining two clips – one showing a crowd barging through a gate, and one showing people assembled around a truck – led us to an older Instagram post from April 13 featuring all five clips. This post also stated that the video showed workers protesting in Noida.
Thus, we concluded that all five clips are old and unrelated to the CJP, which was founded on May 16.
