Court orders fresh probe into alleged evidence destruction in RG Kar rape case

The Calcutta High Court has ordered the CBI to re-investigate the sequence of events, which transpired from the time dinner was consumed on the night of the crime in August 2024 until the cremation the following day.

The Calcutta High Court on Thursday ordered the setting up of a three-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe alleged evidence destruction and allegations by the victim's parents to hush up and downplay the incident in the 2024 RG Kar rape and murder of a doctor.

A bench comprising Justice Shampa Sarkar and Justice Tirthankar Ghosh directed the SIT to examine the allegations raised by the victim's family. The report on the same must be submitted to the High Court by June 25. The SIT will be led by the Joint Director (Eastern Zone) of the CBI while the other two members of the team will be decided within 48 hours of the court's order.

The court has directed the CBI to re-investigate the sequence of events, which transpired from the time dinner was consumed on the night of the brutal crime in August 2024 until the cremation the following day. In regard to the direction, the federal agency is authorised to question anyone it deems necessary.

The victim's parents moved the Calcutta High Court, seeking further investigation into the case that saw massive protests across Bengal and the country, alleging that more than one person was involved in the brutal crime. The on-duty postgraduate doctor's body was found in the seminar room of the hospital in a horrific condition.

Civic volunteer Sanjay Roy was arrested and later sentenced to life imprisonment by the Sealdah sessions court for the rape and murder of the trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

Ratna Debnath, the mother of the victim, won her debut election on a BJP ticket in this year's Bengal assembly elections. During her campaign, she had repeatedly pushed for a deeper probe into the matter to ensure that everyone involved in the same is brought to justice.
