A portion of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa river collapsed in Hamirpur during a late-night storm, killing at least six labourers and injuring several others.

At least six labourers were killed and several others injured after a portion of an under-construction bridge over the Betwa river collapsed in Uttar Pradesh's Hamirpur district during a storm late at night, officials said on Friday.
The incident took place on the bridge being built to connect Mora Kandaur and Kurara areas in the district at around 3 am. According to local officials, a slab of the under-construction structure suddenly gave way during strong winds and stormy weather, trapping several workers under the debris.
Rescue and relief operations were launched immediately after the collapse, with police, district administration teams and emergency responders rushing to the spot. Authorities said there were fears that more labourers could still be trapped beneath the rubble.
Several injured workers were shifted to nearby hospitals for treatment. Officials are continuing search operations at the site.
Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath expressed grief over the incident and announced compensation for the victims. The state government has declared an ex gratia payment of Rs 5 lakh each for the families of those killed in the tragedy.
The Chief Minister also announced financial assistance of Rs 50,000 each for the injured and directed officials to ensure proper medical treatment for all those hurt in the collapse.
He further instructed authorities to closely monitor the ongoing rescue and relief operations and extended condolences to the bereaved families.
Speaking to reporters, Hamirpur District Magistrate Abhishek Goyal said the bridge was being constructed by a private firm and that work on the project had been ongoing for nearly two years. He said all safety arrangements for labourers had been made at the site.
The those killed in the incident were identified as Lokendra (22), Kuldeep Nishad (19), Sawant Yadav (28) and Sabhajeet (30), Pushpendra Chauhan (34), and Rajesh Pal (42), police said. Three labourers were trapped under a pillar and later rescued.
