Special Parliament Session Highlights: Amit Shah says delimitation will benefit South states, outlines seat increase
Special Parliament Session Highlights: The three-day sitting from April 16–18 is underway with the government tabling the Women’s Reservation Bill alongside the Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill and the Delimitation Bill in the Lok Sabha, where Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal opened the debate. With the NDA holding 292 seats against the Opposition’s 233, the two-thirds majority requirement has put the numbers battle at the centre of the proceedings. Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday urged the opposition not to politicise the government’s push to implement the women’s reservation law, warning that parties opposing it in the past had paid a price in elections. Speaking in the Lok Sabha, he assured that the proposed delimitation exercise would not disadvantage any state across the country. Modi appealed to MPs to back the legislation in national interest, calling it a crucial opportunity to bring women into policymaking. The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, along with the Delimitation Bill and a measure for Union territories, was introduced after a vote, with 251 members in favour and 185 against. The row has also spilled onto the streets, with protests led by Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, even as the INDIA bloc continues to protest inside the Parliament.
