The Supreme Court on Wednesday said Aadhaar, the ambitious public scheme that uses biometric data to generate unique identification numbers for citizens, was constitutionally valid.
The majority opinion of the five-judge Constitution bench -- that of Chief Justice Dipak Misra, Justice Arjan Kumar Sikri and Justice AM Khanwilkar -- said there was a "sufficient defence mechanism" for authentication in the scheme. Sikri read the ruling on behalf of the three judges.
