In 2015, JDU chief Nitish Kumar contested the Bihar Assembly election with the RJD and the Congress, having broken away from the BJP-led NDA. Nitish Kumar parted ways ahead of the 2014 Lok Sabha polls as he did not want to accept the BJP's decision to project Narendra Modi as the prime ministerial candidate. In 2015, the RJD-JD(U)-Congress combine had won the state assembly election. However, Nitish Kumar ditched the Mahagathbandhan in July 2017 to rejoin the NDA.
Cut to 2020, Janata Dal (United)-Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) alliance are contesting the Bihar elections this time.
