A day after Prime Minister Narendra Modi invoked Tamil pride and praised Tamil language during his speeches in Chennai, the DMK welcomed his remark and urged the prime minister to make Tamil the official language.
DMK chief MK Stalin on Tuesday said it is the responsibility of the central government to give due recognition to Tamil.
"We are glad to see our Prime Minister praising Tamil as the oldest language. But we wish to bring to his notice that Tamil is not an official language in India unlike Sri Lanka or Singapore. The central government should take steps to make Tamil and all other 22 languages mentioned in the 8th schedule of the Constitution as official languages," he added.
