The Rajya Sabha has passed the Viksit Bharat Guarantee for Rozgar and Ajeevika Mission (Gramin) (VB-G RAM G) Bill via a voice vote at midnight. The new legislation, which replaces the existing MNREGA scheme, has triggered intense protests from the opposition. An unidentified speaker from the opposition stated that the 'bill is going to be very, very harmful for the poorest of the poor' due to changes in the funding pattern. The opposition alleges that the government has altered the funding ratio from 90:10 to 60:40, thereby increasing the burden on state governments. Furthermore, protesting MPs have accused the government of removing Mahatma Gandhi's name from the scheme. While Congress MPs held portraits of Mahatma Gandhi in a silent protest, Trinamool Congress members raised slogans at the Parliament gate. The government maintains that the proposed changes are for the betterment of the poor.
