Sakshee Malikkh, an emblem of Indian wrestling and an Olympic bronze medallist, made a resolute decision to hang up her boots in the wake of the Wrestling Federation of India's (WFI) presidential elections.
The catalyst for her retirement was the election of Sanjay Singh as the new WFI president. Malik, who has been a vocal participant in the 2023 Indian wrestlers' protest, viewed Singh's election as a continuation of the status quo, given his close association with the former WFI president, Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh. The latter had been compelled to step down amidst serious allegations of sexual abuse and harassment.
Malikkh's retirement announcement underscored her discontent with the current leadership dynamics within the WFI, signalling her refusal to compete under a regime she deemed unsupportive and linked to past controversies.
