Union Minority Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju introduced a bill on Thursday to amend the law governing Waqf boards. If passed, the bill will significantly increase the government's control over regulating Waqf properties, prompting protests from Opposition MPs, who labeled it "unconstitutional" and "draconian."
Congress leader KC Venugopal said the bill was "draconian" and a "fundamental attack" on the Constitution. He alleged that the bill would create religious divisions and hate between communities. This bill is a fundamental attack on the Constitution. Through this bill, they are putting in a provision that non-Muslims will also be members of the Waqf governing council," the Congress leader added.
DMK MP Kanimozhi stated, "This bill directly violates Article 30, which grants minorities the right to administer their institutions. It specifically targets a particular religious group."
