The faction-ridden Punjab Congress delivered a huge surprise when it chose Charanjit Singh Channi, the minister of technical educational and industrial training, to be the next chief minister.

Channi's appointment came after another outgoing minister-Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa's name started doing the rounds for the top post. But the Congress high command was quick to change sides.
