Union Home Minister Amit Shah chaired a high-level meeting in New Delhi to review India’s flood preparedness and heatwave response plans ahead of the monsoon season. The meeting focused on disaster management, early warning systems, flood forecasting and coordination between central and state agencies.

Officials discussed how India can better prepare for floods and extreme heat situations at the same time, while also reducing loss of life and damage to property.

The review comes as several parts of the country prepare for rising temperatures and the possibility of heavy rainfall in the coming months.

FOCUS ON FLOOD FORECASTING

During the meeting, Amit Shah reviewed the country’s flood forecasting systems and asked officials to improve the use of advanced technology and real-time data integration. Discussions also covered better coordination between agencies involved in disaster management and emergency response.

The government is also looking at long-term flood mitigation measures, including river management projects, protection of key infrastructure and scientific forecasting methods. Officials reviewed the implementation of decisions taken during last year’s meeting as well.

PREPARING FOR FLOODS AND HEATWAVES TOGETHER

A major focus of the review meeting was handling “simultaneous disasters”, especially floods and heatwaves occurring together. The Centre stressed the need for integrated planning and stronger preparedness at the state and district levels.
