Commuters travelling through parts of East Delhi may face slower journeys and traffic congestion over the coming weeks as the Public Works Department (PWD) carries out desilting work along a canal drain stretch.

According to a traffic advisory, special traffic arrangements have been put in place from June 2 to June 30, 2026, to facilitate the work.

Authorities have warned that traffic movement is likely to remain affected, particularly during peak morning and evening hours.

WHICH STRETCH IS AFFECTED?

The work is being carried out along the canal drain stretch between LM Bundh, Shastri Nagar and Karkari More/Khureji Red Light.

This corridor is used daily by commuters travelling between East Delhi neighbourhoods and nearby arterial roads, making it a busy route during rush hours.

WHY TRAFFIC MAY SLOW DOWN

As part of the arrangements, one carriageway on the Geeta Colony side has been closed, while temporary traffic diversions have been introduced to manage vehicle movement around the work zone.

The lane closure is expected to reduce road capacity, which could lead to bottlenecks and longer waiting times, especially when traffic volumes are high.

ADVISORY FOR COMMUTERS

Traffic police have advised motorists to:

  • Plan journeys in advance and allow extra travel time.
  • Follow diversion signs and directions from traffic personnel.
  • Consider alternative routes where possible.
  • Avoid the affected stretch during peak hours if travel is not essential.

WORK TO CONTINUE TILL JUNE 30

The desilting operation is scheduled to continue until June 30, 2026. Traffic restrictions and diversions are expected to remain in place throughout the period, depending on the progress of the work.

Authorities have urged commuters to cooperate with traffic management measures and stay updated on advisories before heading out.

For regular users of the LM Bundh–Khureji corridor, planning ahead could help avoid delays during the month-long maintenance exercise.
