Indian Railways plans to strengthen passenger safety by expanding AI-based surveillance, drones and CCTV systems across stations and trains while urging travellers to report suspicious activity.

Indian Railways is preparing a major technology-driven safety upgrade across its network. The Railways will increase the use of AI surveillance, drones and CCTV cameras to improve passenger safety and strengthen security at stations and inside trains.

Officials said the move comes after recent security concerns and incidents involving anti-social elements on railway premises.

Along with deploying smart monitoring systems, the Railways has also urged passengers to stay alert during travel and immediately report suspicious activity using the railway helpline number 139.

The latest railway safety plan will focus on faster intelligence gathering, better coordination and stronger cyber security measures across the country.

AI AND DRONES TO BOOST RAILWAY SAFETY

According to railway officials, artificial intelligence-based monitoring systems and drones will be used more actively to track suspicious movement and improve real-time surveillance across stations and railway routes.

CCTV coverage will also be expanded further across the railway network.

The safety review was discussed during a high-level meeting chaired by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw at Rail Bhawan in New Delhi. Officials from different railway zones joined the discussion on improving security measures nationwide.

PASSENGERS ASKED TO STAY ALERT

Railways said passengers can also play an important role in improving security during travel. Travellers have been advised to immediately report unattended items, suspicious behaviour or unusual activity at stations and inside trains through helpline number 139.

Officials added that recent investigations into some railway incidents pointed towards possible involvement of anti-social elements, which has increased focus on preventive monitoring and intelligence systems.

FOCUS ON CYBERSECURITY AND SMART MONITORING

Apart from physical surveillance, Railways is also working on stronger cybersecurity systems and improved coordination between the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Government Railway Police.

Better sharing of information between departments is expected to help respond faster to security threats.

The Railways said technology-driven monitoring will continue to expand in phases as part of its wider railway security upgrade plan.
