A worker who believed he was close to being fired from his accounting role turned to Reddit to ask social media users what careers might suit someone dealing with ADHD-related challenges.

According to him, he entered the accounting field despite not originally wanting to pursue it because it matched his degree and offered stable work opportunities after he failed to break into high finance and consulting roles.

In his post titled “Getting fired due to ADHD, what careers would suit me?” on r/careerguidance, he explained that managers repeatedly raised concerns about mistakes in spreadsheets, inconsistent productivity, disorganisation, and difficulty handling multiple tasks at once.

He wrote that although he completed most of his work correctly, the role demanded extreme precision and left little room for even small errors. He also said the company expected steady productivity every day rather than periods of intense output followed by slower phases.

“I was placed on a performance improvement plan and now they’ve stopped allocating new work to me, while my colleagues are all still getting new work. My manager reviews have all been negative,” he wrote.

He further explained that he believed he had ADHD but had never received an official diagnosis because specialist waiting times where he lived stretched to six years.

The worker also shared that personal issues outside work worsened his ability to stay organised and manage deadlines, adding that he struggled to find time to apply for other jobs while dealing with workplace pressure.

He said he considered leaving accounting entirely and asked social media users for suggestions on careers that might better suit someone who was sociable, analytical, empathetic, and ambitious, but struggled with organisation, conflict, and time management.

The post received several reactions from social media users, with people advising him to seek a diagnosis and sharing their own experiences managing ADHD in demanding careers.

One user wrote, “Start pursuing a diagnosis. Even if it takes time. Then you can get medication that will help with the symptoms that are affecting your daily life.”

Another added, “I was someone who wasn’t diagnosed with ADHD until adulthood and the medications helped immensely.”

A different user reacted to the long waiting period, writing, “Six years??? That’s ridiculous.”

Others encouraged him to explore private clinics if possible and said treatment and coping strategies could make working life significantly easier.
