Every masterpiece has cheap copy: Internet roasts Varun's Chunnari Chunnari remake

The recreated Chunnari Chunnari from Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai has been unveiled with Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur. Its release has triggered online criticism and nostalgic comparisons with Biwi No. 1's track featuring Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen.

The makers of Varun Dhawan's upcoming film Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai have dropped a recreated version of Chunnari Chunnari, and the internet has already delivered its verdict. Also featuring Mrunal Thakur and Pooja Hegde, while the song banks heavily on nostalgia, social media users were quick to argue, calling it 'a cheap copy', and that some classics are better left untouched.

The recreated track features Varun Dhawan, Pooja Hegde and Mrunal Thakur grooving to the revamped version of the hit song from the 1999 film Biwi No. 1. But instead of turning into an instant crowd favourite, the remake has triggered a wave of criticism online, with many viewers accusing Bollywood of once again leaning too hard on nostalgia.

Social media reactions to the remake ranged from disappointed to outright brutal.

One X user called the song “more nostalgia bait than a fresh chartbuster,” adding that while the styling, choreography and energy worked, the track itself felt “average” as a standalone number.

Another user wrote, “No, OG Chunnari Chunnari was so good. Not every song needs a remake. Ruined a perfect track (sic).”

A different comment read, “The original made you want to get up and dance instantly. This one somehow does the opposite.” One user even joked that the remake had pushed him back to listening to the older version “at least 10 times.”

Not everyone completely dismissed the track, though. One post read, “New version Chunnari Chunnari is good. No doubt. But the old one is not just a song. It’s a memory. It’s nostalgic. It’s an emotion. Varun Dhawan is doing a fabulous job. But Salman Khan’s swag is literally unbeatable.”

Another reaction, however, bluntly called the remake “cringe”, while describing the original as “pure nostalgia.”

Interestingly, the song’s release comes with a side of industry drama too.

At the recent David Dhawan Film Festival hosted by PVR INOX, filmmaker David Dhawan attended the event alongside his son Varun, while Salman Khan ended up stealing the spotlight with a playful jab. Referring to the recreated track, Salman jokingly told the audience, “Isne mera ek aur gaana uthaya (he has picked up another one of my songs),” leaving Varun blushing as he replied, “Bhai rehne do (Brother, please let it go).”

The moment quickly caught attention online, especially since Varun has previously appeared in recreated versions of Salman songs such as Chalti Hai Kya 9 Se 12 and Oonchi Hai Building. Chunnari Chunnari now joins that growing list.

The new version has been arranged by Akshay Raheja and Abhishek Singh, with choreography by Remo D'Souza. The recreated track has been sung by IP Singh, Jonita Gandhi, Asees Kaur, Sudhir Yaduvanshi and Anuradha Sriram.

The original version, meanwhile, remains firmly etched in Bollywood pop culture memory. Picturised on Salman Khan and Sushmita Sen, the song featured vocals by Abhijeet Bhattacharya and Anuradha Sriram, with music composed by Anu Malik.

Chunnari Chunnari controversy

The song has also found itself caught in a larger controversy involving producer Ramesh Taurani, David Dhawan and veteran producer Vashu Bhagnani. Bhagnani has alleged that songs linked to one of his films were recreated and reused without his consent.

He has repeatedly maintained that the issue is ethical rather than financial, while expressing disappointment over David Dhawan’s alleged involvement in recreating songs associated with his films for Hai Jawani Toh Ishq Hona Hai.
