A crossover film bringing together the worlds of Django Unchained and The Mask of Zorro is officially moving ahead, with Oscar winner Brian Helgeland (LA Confidential) set to write the script. While the project is inspired by the 2014 comic series co-written by Quentin Tarantino and Matt Wagner, the film, reportedly titled Django/Zorro, will explore an entirely new narrative featuring the legendary sharpshooter and the masked vigilante.

While specific plot details remain under wraps, the film is expected to follow Django, the bounty hunter from the 2012 revisionist Western, as reported by Variety. In this new adventure, he will reportedly join forces with the iconic masked vigilante, Zorro, famously portrayed by Anthony Hopkins and Antonio Banderas in The Mask of Zorro (1998) and by Banderas in The Legend of Zorro (2005). The film is in early development at Sony Pictures, with no director attached. Tarantino is not expected to direct.

Tarantino has spoken about a Django and Zorro crossover for years, and at one stage had comedian Jerrod Carmichael working on a draft of the script. That version was later shelved for reasons that were not made public. Speaking to GQ in 2022, Carmichael said: "It’s actually an incredible, incredible script that came in from that Django/Zorro that I would love for Sony to figure out, but I realise the impossibility of it."

Foxx and Banderas have not signed on to the film. However, Banderas has previously said that Tarantino approached him about starring in the crossover, suggesting the project had at least reached him. “Tarantino talked to me, I think on the Oscar night in 2020 when I was nominated for Pain and Glory. We saw each other at one of those parties,” Banderas was quoted by Variety earlier in 2022.

Banderas recalled his enthusiastic reaction to the project, noting that he was immediately on board when the idea was presented to him. He expressed high praise for Tarantino’s unique ability to elevate stories inspired by 1960s and 1970s B-movies, transforming that specific style of material into something of exceptional quality and interest.

For now, the film remains in the early stages at Sony, with Helgeland attached as writer, no director in place and no cast confirmed, as a project Tarantino has discussed for years moves forward again.

Tarantino's last theatrical release was the 2019 film, Once Upon A Time in Hollywood, featuring actors Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie.

The director-producer is backing the Once Upon A Time in Hollywood spin-off, titled The Adventures of Cliff Booth. The upcoming film will see Pitt resuming his character of Cliff Booth.
