Actor Idris Elba is now Sir Idris Elba after King Charles grants knighthood
King Charles III knighted Idris Elba at Windsor Castle for his services to young people. The honour recognises both his contribution to entertainment and his longstanding work empowering young people.

Actor Idris Elba has been officially knighted by King Charles III during an investiture ceremony held at Windsor Castle on June 2. The 53-year-old actor, activist and musician received one of the United Kingdom's highest honours in recognition of his services to young people.
During the ceremony, King Charles, 77, carried out the traditional honouring ritual, tapping a sword on Elba's shoulders as he knelt before him. The occasion was later shared by The Royal Family on its official Instagram page, which posted pictures from the ceremony and congratulated all those who received honours.
Elba also marked the occasion on social media by reposting the image on his Instagram Stories. Alongside another photograph of him wearing his medal and holding hands with his wife, Sabrina Elba, on the castle grounds, he wrote, "We are thankful. The work continues."
He also tagged Sabrina Elba's Instagram account and the Elba Hope Foundation, the charitable organisation the couple launched in 2022. The foundation focusses on supporting diaspora communities by creating greater access to opportunities and working with local leaders and institutions to tackle issues such as youth unemployment, educational inequality and food insecurity.
The honour marks another major moment in Elba's career, recognising both his contribution to entertainment and his longstanding work supporting and empowering young people. The investiture ceremony also explains his absence from the New York premiere of his upcoming film, Masters of the Universe, where the rest of the cast was present to promote the project.
A passionate Arsenal FC supporter, Elba also shared a celebratory video on Instagram. In the clip, he is seen jumping with excitement while holding up a new Arsenal jersey bearing the words "SIR ELBA" on the back.
Several other prominent personalities were also honoured during the ceremony. Figure-skating duo Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean received a damehood and knighthood respectively. Actor-author Meera Syal was awarded a damehood, while entertainer Paul Elliott was made a Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (MBE).
Elba's knighthood at Windsor Castle recognised his services to young people, while his social media posts and the work of the Elba Hope Foundation reflected the cause for which he was honoured. The ceremony also saw a number of other well-known names receive honours from the King.
