Bengali filmmaker Anik Dutta dies at 62 after falling from terrace in Kolkata
Filmmaker Anik Dutta died after allegedly falling from a terrace in Kolkata's Hindustan Park area on Wednesday. Police are probing the circumstances, with a suicide note reportedly recovered and his post-mortem pending.

Filmmaker Anik Dutta died on Wednesday after allegedly falling from the terrace of a residential building in Kolkata’s Hindustan Park area. He was rushed to a private hospital in Dhakuria in a critical condition, where doctors declared him dead. Police from Gariahat police station are investigating the incident.
According to sources, a suicide note was reportedly recovered from the terrace of the apartment building. Police said the director had been suffering from depression for a long time and was also taking medication for anxiety. Officials said Anik Dutta had visited his estranged wife’s residence in Hindustan Park on Wednesday, though it is still unclear what exactly happened before the fall.
He was found in a bloodied condition outside the four-storey building with severe injuries to his head, waist, arms and legs. Doctors reportedly said he had died before reaching the hospital. Police currently suspect it to be a case of suicide, though the investigation is ongoing.
Reports of problems in Dutta’s personal life had surfaced last year. After nearly 25 years of marriage, the director and his wife Sandhi Dutta had reportedly separated and were undergoing divorce proceedings. Anik Dutta was living alone at his Gariahat apartment, while his wife stayed separately in Hindustan Park in Kolkata.
The filmmaker had also reportedly been seriously ill a few months ago and was hospitalised due to heart-related complications. Sources said marital issues were ongoing at the time as well, though Dutta had chosen not to speak publicly about the reasons behind the separation.
Known for his sharp satire and unconventional storytelling, Anik Dutta carved a distinct place for himself in Bengali cinema. He began his career in advertising before making his directorial debut with Bhooter Bhabishyat in 2012. The film received widespread appreciation for blending humour, social commentary and supernatural themes.
He later directed films such as Ashchorjyo Prodeep, Meghnadbodh Rohoshyo, Borunbabur Bondhu and Aparajito. Aparajito, inspired by the making of Satyajit Ray’s Pather Panchali, was especially praised by critics and audiences.
Dutta’s body has been sent for postmortem. His last rites will reportedly be held on Thursday after his daughter arrives from Mumbai. The investigation is being handled jointly by Gariahat police station and Kolkata Police’s homicide department.
