Jana Nayagan makers to refund distributors as CM Vijay's film remains in limbo
The producers of actor-politician Vijay's Jana Nayagan have plans to refund distributor advances as the film awaits clearance for an independent release. The move follows months of certification delays, legal setbacks and mounting losses across the chain.

KVN Productions, the banner behind Jana Nayagan, is planning to refund all advances paid by distributors for actor-turned-politician Vijay’s final film and release it independently once the pending certification and legal issues are resolved. The move comes after months of uncertainty over the film’s release, with no clarity yet on when it will reach theatres.
Confirming the development to SCREEN, KVN Productions business head Mohan Suprith said, “While we are still in talks, we have decided to refund the money to the film distributors. We felt it was unfair to keep them in loop, while we are still waiting for a possible release date.” The decision was reportedly taken at Vijay’s direction.
The development comes more than five months after Jana Nayagan missed its originally scheduled release date of January 9. Since then, the film has remained in limbo because of an unresolved dispute over its Central Board of Film Certification rating. The CBFC’s regional panel had initially recommended a UA 16+ certificate, but final clearance was stalled. At the time of the planned release, KVN Productions had moved the Madras High Court seeking to expedite the certification process.
Legal hurdles and ongoing certification delays
The CBFC then challenged the single judge’s ruling before a division bench of the Madras High Court, which stayed the order on January 9, the day the film was due to release. That sent the certification process back to the starting point. In February 2026, the producers withdrew their writ petition and resubmitted the film for review through the CBFC’s standard process. Although the Revising Committee later screened the film, further delays followed in the issue of the certificate, and there is still no confirmed release date.
Pongal box office hit hard by delays
The delay has also led to major financial losses across the distribution chain. Distributors worldwide are estimated to have suffered losses of around Rs 200 crore, mainly because of interest payments on the money committed to the film. Theatre owners were also affected during the Pongal 2026 season, as no January release was able to make up for the absence of Jana Nayagan from cinema screens.
UK-based distributors Ahimsa and Boleyn had already refunded nearly Rs 8 crore in advance bookings after the film failed to release in January. Their statement at the time described the refund as painful but necessary because of the uncertainty around the release timeline. The film’s non-theatrical rights deal has also reportedly been cancelled, adding to KVN Productions’ financial strain.
Directed by H Vinoth and produced by Venkat K Narayana under KVN Productions, Jana Nayagan was announced as Vijay’s final film before his complete shift to politics. Vijay took oath as Tamil Nadu Chief Minister on May 10 after his party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, won the state Assembly elections.
The film also features Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Prakash Raj, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Priyamani and Narain, with music by Anirudh Ravichander.
