Suriya and Trisha's Karuppu 9 am shows, scheduled for May 14, has been cancelled.

Suriya has made a strong box office comeback with Karuppu, directed by RJ Balaji and co-starring Trisha. The film has grossed Rs 120 crore globally in its opening weekend despite last-minute show cancellation and mixed reviews. The fantasy action drama has opened to strong numbers across markets, with audience turnout building steadily through its first weekend.

According to trade website Sacnilk, Karuppu earned Rs 68 crore in India nett (gross minus taxes) collections in its first three days. Its India gross stands at Rs 78.75 crore, while overseas markets have contributed Rs 42 crore, taking the film's worldwide gross to Rs 120.75 crore after its opening weekend. With this, the film crossed the Rs 100-crore mark in just three days.

The film opened on Friday with Rs 15.50 crore in India nett collections and recorded an occupancy of 46.9 per cent. On Saturday, collections rose sharply to Rs 24.15 crore nett, with occupancy increasing to 56.8 per cent. Sunday brought the film's highest single-day total so far, as it collected Rs 28.35 crore nett and occupancy climbed further to 64.3 per cent.

In the film, Suriya plays Saravanan, a lawyer who takes the form of the local deity Karuppusamy. The story follows a helpless father and daughter who are robbed and trapped in a corrupt legal system.

The film has received a mixed response from viewers. An excerpt from the India Today review read, "Karuppu's first half is cleverly written by RJ Balaji and team. It sets up the premise and the fantasy element, and establishes the context. However, the conflict remains puzzling as the film gets too convenient and bends or breaks the rules as it pleases. This leaves a bitter aftertaste, especially when you sit with the film after the credits."

The film's opening weekend has underlined Suriya's return at the box office, after a string of underwhelming theatrical performances over the last decade.
