Just four weeks before the deadly Air India AI171 crash, the UK’s Civil Aviation Authority flagged the fuel shutoff valve on Boeing aircraft—including the 787 Dreamliner that went down. The UK safety alert followed a 2015 FAA directive that had warned of faulty fuel shutoff valve actuators in multiple Boeing models. In 2018, the US FAA also raised concerns about fuel control switches lacking proper locking mechanisms—a design also used in the Dreamliners. Yet, as per the AAIB’s preliminary report, Air India didn’t inspect these switches, since the advisory wasn’t mandatory. Could these warnings have helped prevent the tragedy? Here's a breakdown of what was flagged and when.
