When a child has SMA, there's a breakdown of the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. The brain stops sending messages that control muscle movement.
SMA Type 1 is a severe form of SMA. A child may not be able to support their head or sit without help. They may have floppy arms and legs and problems swallowing.
