Covid-19 surge: Lockdown should be last resort for states, says PM Modi

Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed the nation on the prevailing Covid-19 situation in the country on Tuesday. Stating that in today's situation, there is a need to save the country from lockdown, PM Modi said, "I appeal to the states that they should use lockdown as the last option. Try as much as possible to protect yourselves from lockdown. Focus on micro-containment zones."

PM Narendra Modi's address to the nation on Covid-19 comes at a time when India is seeing an exponential spike in its Covid-19 cases, while deaths too are increasing.

For several days now, India has been recording more than 2 lakh fresh coronavirus cases every day. The active case tally has crossed the 16 lakh-mark and several states have reported a shortage of ICU beds, ventilators, and medical oxygen to treat Covid-19 patients.
