In one of the last judgments by Chief Justice of India Dipak Misra before his retirement, the Supreme Court upheld its 1994 ruling that a mosque is not essential to namaz. On September 27, 2018 with one dissenting judgment, the SC paved the way for hearing on the Ayodhya land dispute from October 29. The dispute dates back to 1992 when Babri Masjid, a 16th century mosque in Uttar Pradesh's Ayodhya was destroyed by kar sevaks who wanted a Ram temple to be built on the land they claim was their deity's birthplace.
