I have returned to my roots, says Navjot Singh Sidhu after joining Congress

India Today Web Desk
New Delhi,UPDATED: Jan 16, 2017 12:25 IST

Former cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu today spoke extensively about his association with the Congress party at a press conference in Delhi.

"I am a born Congressman; I have just come back to my roots. My father sardar Bhagwant Singh Sidhu through Kirthi Ghadar Party began his political career with Congress. He served Congress for 40 years as MLA and MLC. He was a part of freedom struggle," said Sidhu while recounting his origin.

The former BJP MP said that this was his ghar wapsi and that he owed his existence to his party. He said that the battle is on to reclaim the glory of Punjab.

He said that at present 55 per cent people in Punjab are between the age of 18 and 39 years. According to him the youth of the state need a direction to progress.

"Drugs is a reality in Punjab and one cannot have an ostrich mentality of burying their heads avoid confrontation," he said. Welcoming the leader, Congress representatives said that Sidhu's presence will strengthen the party not only in Punjab but also across the nation.

"I am confident that Sidhu's presence will strengthen Congress and fortify the secular forces in the country. I believe that this can positively influence the party's performance in Punjab," said Asha Kumari in-charge of Punjab All India Congress Committee (AICC).
