India's severe LPG shortage is showing signs of easing as the carrier ship Shivalik docked at Gujarat's Mundra Port after transiting the Strait of Hormuz. The vessel, along with a second carrier, Nanda Devi, brings a combined total of 92,700 metric tons of liquefied petroleum gas, equivalent to over a day's national supply. This shipment is set for distribution across northern and southern India to alleviate a crisis that has heavily impacted commercial establishments, forcing some to use alternative fuels. The LPG shortage coincides with major political developments for the West Bengal assembly elections, where Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has been protesting the rising gas prices. Meanwhile, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) released its first list of 144 candidates, announcing that Suvendu Adhikari will contest against Banerjee in the high-profile Bhavanipur constituency, in addition to Nandigram.
