The Long Story: Aftermath of nuclear tests

Pokhran -- a small, sleepy, nondescript -- yet the centre of India's nuclear ambitions. Twice in the span of quarter century, it was Pokhran that bore the brunt of alleged nuclear fallout. Now, many people of Pokhran's Khetolai village complain of cancer, joint pains, skin disease and other ailments. These villagers allege that they have contracted these diseases after the nuclear tests.

Mangilal Vishnoi, a retired teacher of Khetolai village in Pokhran, said that since 1974, 12 villagers have died of cancer. He added that every villager is suffering from some or the other disease.
