In the longest ever Independence Day speech by an Indian Prime Minister, PM Narendra Modi spoke about various topics, including women's safety, the idea of 'One Nation One Election' and a 'secular' Uniform Civil Code, among others.
He claimed that the current civil code as "communal" and advocated for a secular alternative.
"The Supreme Court has held discussions regarding the Uniform Civil Code again and again, it has given orders several times," PM Modi said.
Talking about the idea of 'One Nation One Election', the Prime Minister said, "Frequent elections are creating a problem for the country. Policies and work are being associated with elections. There have been discussions about this. One nation, one election is important. I appeal to political parties and those who understand the Constitution that we should move towards one nation, one election."
