Bengal showdown over UP 'Singham' cop: Should he be called back?

Ahead of the second phase of the West Bengal assembly elections, a major controversy has erupted over the conduct of IPS officer Ajay Pal Sharma, deployed as an Election Commission observer in South 24 Parganas. The official faces allegations of barging into homes and intimidating the family members of a local political candidate. A police complaint has been filed regarding these actions. During a panel discussion, a former Chief Election Commissioner stated that the observer exceeded his mandate, emphasising that observers are only meant to report irregularities to the district administration, not take direct action. The former official suggested the observer should be recalled or suspended. Meanwhile, political representatives clashed over the issue.
