Explained: What is Chandrayaan-2 mission?

Chandrayaan-2 Vikram lander is all set to make a soft landing on the surface of the Moon in the early hours of Saturday (September 7). It will be for the first time that a country is attempting to land on the south pole area of the Moon which is 70 degrees south.

India's lunar mission will not only boost its science and technology but also help all space-faring nations to eventually set up man's permanent presence on the Moon, former Nasa astronaut Jerry Linenger said as the countdown for the Chandrayaan-2 spacecraft to land on the celestial body nears its end.
