Chamari Athapaththu, the captain of Sri Lanka Women says they bowled well throughout the innings but in the last 3 overs, they struggled a little bit, where England scored 30-40 runs and feels they dropped the catch of Nat Sciver-Brunt, which made the difference. Tells that they need to improve before the next game in all three departments. Admits she loves to open the innings, they tweaked the batting order today. She mentions her legs are okay, she has a couple of days of rest and hopes to bounce back in the next game.

The victorious skipper of England Women, Nat Sciver-Brunt, is also adjudged as the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for her all-round contribution. She made a valiant run-a-ball 117, followed by picking up two crucial wickets with the ball. Begins by saying that the plan was to build a partnership with Heather Knight. Mentions that they wanted to make sure that they post something so that the incoming batters can accelerate towards the backend. But admits that it didn't quite happen, but shares that they have spoken about it many times, that having a set batter till the end is very crucial. Shares that the wicket was a bit inconsistent but feels happy that she managed to contribute for her team. Appreciates the spinners for bowling well and says it was turning quite a lot and details that playing down the ground was her best bet. Feels happy to score her first hundred as the English skipper. Further says that they started off pretty well as Tammy Beaumont and Jones showed some good intent inside the Powerplay. Says at the start it looked fairly easy to score, but there was a variable spin and bounce throughout, so had to adjust according to that. Admits that they have been very well in patches, but expects her side to be a bit more clinical to play a complete game of cricket.

Earlier in the game, Nat Sciver-Brunt led England Women's fightback with a warrior-like performance, single-handedly rescuing her team from early setbacks. England posted a strong total, with Sciver-Brunt's 60-run partnership with Heather Knight being crucial. Despite a tricky pitch, Sciver-Brunt's smart batting helped England recover from 125/3 to post a big score. Sri Lanka Women bowlers were clinical but gave away 20-30 runs extra. However, the biggest moment in the game was when they dropped Nat Sciver-Brunt when she was on 3, the rest, as they say, is history. 

There is no doubt that Sri Lanka Women rely heavily on Chamari Athapaththu but today it was good to see the top order step up with their skipper absent for a while. It gave a lot of hope and also kept them in the game. However, to do it for the full allotted quota was a big ask and against quality spinners like Sophie Ecclestone, Linsey Smith and Charlie Dean, it was going to be difficult. 

Cometh the hour, cometh the player! England were all over the place, bowling looseners and showcasing an under-par fielding effort, but once the number one-ranked bowler in the world stepped into the attack, the tide turned in England's favour. Sophie Ecclestone picked not two or three but four wickets to break Sri Lanka Women's back. The middle order collapsed once she was introduced and it included the big wicket of Chamari Athapaththu. Once the Lankan skipper fell, it was all over for them.

The chase was filled wth melodrama. All eyes were on Chamari Athapaththu to lead Sri Lanka Women in the chase, but the home team's skipper pulled her hamstring (that's what it first looked like, and she was taken off on a stretcher) to shatter hopes of a win against the four-time champions. England probably took things lightly once Chamari Athapaththu retired out. That allowed the hosts to get into the game. Harshitha Samarawickrama and Hasini Perera put on a solid 58-run partnership to get the chase back on track. 

A comfortable win for England Women, and they make it three out of as many games in the ICC Womens World Cup 2025 and go on top of the points table. England Women had to work hard for the two points today. Sri Lanka Women fought hard, but anything above 220 was going to be difficult for them to chase it down.

Okay then, 254 is the figure Sri Lanka Women are tasked up to hunt down to register their first two points in this World Cup. It is going to be quite a grind for the Lankan ladies, given their over-reliance on Chamari Athapaththu with the bat. An interesting stat shows that deliveries bowled under 75 kph turned significantly more, suggesting that extra flight provided greater grip and spin on this slowish surface. This will make the likes of Ecclestone, Smith and Dean interested as each of these three bowlers operates in different trajectories. So, the mantra for England? Get the Lankan skipper out early to assert dominance in the game. Should be an interesting chase. Stay tuned.

England Women's TAMMY BEAUMONT is up for a chat with the broadcasters. She says the conditions changed throughout the innings. It skidded initially, and in the middle phase, it assisted the spinners. On Nat's innings, she doesn't feel any pressure and says she soaked up the pressure, which helped her to play her game in the end. Reckons she was trying to take the game on with the new ball but overall, she is happy with the total on the board.

Boundaries had completely dried up, and Sciver-Brunt appeared focused on preserving her wicket as batters kept falling at the other end. It made sense, as losing her at that stage would’ve left England staring at a modest total. But the skipper shifted gears brilliantly, reaching her century and finishing strong towards the backend, as England added 49 runs in the final five overs to post a respectable total. That acceleration in the final overs was a perfect display of how to pace the innings in ODI cricket, under pressure.

The control and squeeze were there from the bowlers, as they didn't concede a single boundary for around seven overs in that 21-30 over phase, but Sciver-Brunt looked unbothered by that and brought up her well-constructed fifty. However, she kept losing partners at the other end as Sri Lankan spinners continued to produce regular breakthroughs. And with Capsey too, gone, England Women slipped from 146/3 to 168/6, with Inoka Ranaweera the destructor in chief, who also picked up a double whammy. In that 31-40 over phase, England Women lost three wickets and could only add 34 runs, with Nat Sciver-Brunt stranded alone at one end.

There was just enough grip and drift on the surface to keep the batters cautious, but Heather Knight and skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt - the pair who rescued England against Bangladesh - once again steadied things after early setbacks. Sciver-Brunt, dropped on just 3, made Sri Lanka pay as the duo built a vital 60-run stand for the third wicket through smart strike rotation and confident footwork against spin. It wasn’t about power-hitting, but spending time in the middle did the job as runs flowed naturally. However, just when things were looking ominous for Sri Lanka, Inoka Ranaweera struck to end the partnership, triggering a brief slide.

A spin-heavy start set the tone as England were put in to bat first. The Sri Lankan bowlers maintained good control with disciplined lines and lengths, though any looseners were duly punished. A few sloppy moments in the field also let England off the hook early on. A mix-up sent Amy Jones back, while Tammy Beaumont’s promising start was halted by Sugandika Kumari, leaving things evenly balanced at 50/2 after the Powerplay.

Take a bow, Nat Sciver-Brunt. In adversity, she rose to the occasion and fought like a warrior, that too, single-handedly. Won't be any exaggeration to say that it was truly a one-woman show in Colombo. 125/3 in the first 25 overs, followed by 128/6 in the next 25, England Women have managed to post the highest first inning total at the R. Premadasa, in this World Cup so far. At one stage, it didn't even look like England would survive for all the allotted overs, and this score on the board will hurt the Sri Lankans a lot.

England’s SOPHIE ECCLESTONE chats with Natalie Germanos. She says it feels great to be back in Colombo and shares that the team is off to a good start in the tournament. Sophie feels nice seeing the side show resilience against Bangladesh in their last game. About the pitch, she cheekily adds that she expects a bit of turn. Talking about the bowling combinations, she highlights their strong spin attack with herself, Charlie Dean, and Linsey Smith, along with experienced spinner Sarah Glenn in the squad, who has an impressive bowling record.

PITCH REPORT - Pommie Mbangwa and Sana Mir are pitchside with their thoughts. Pommie begins by pointing that there is a threat of rain with 71 percent of humidity. About the dimensions, it is 56 meters and 63 meters on the squares, with 70 meters down the ground. Shares that there is still a bit of work going on the pitch. Sana Mir joins him and shares that this pitch has offered something for both batters and bowlers, but she feels that spinners will play a key role as they have taken 18 wickets this tournament. Stresses that they should target the 3-4 meter area. Reckons that with the rain coming in, batting second would be a better option.

The skipper of England Women, Nat Sciver-Brunt, says they would have batted first, as she feels it's a good surface to bat on and expects the surface to slow down as the game progresses. Informs that they are playing the same team. On Alice Capsey, Nat says she is a brilliant all-rounder. Also admits they are not blessed with many all-rounders in England but she is a champion cricketer.  Mentions they are not taking the opposition lightly as she feels the Lankans have some great spinners who can control the game well.

The captain of Sri Lanka Women, Chamari Athapaththu, says that she is very confident of her bowling unit as they have an experienced lineup. She points out that the conditions are good for the spinners. Believes that if they restrict England to around 240, they can chase it down. Shares that they have enjoyed the rest days and have trained hard on Friday. Admits that they have struggled with the batting in the middle overs and shares that they have worked really hard on it. Feels privileged to play in front of the home crowd. Informs they have made one change - Dewmi Vihanga comes in for Achini Kulasuriya.
