PBKS hardly break sweat in 210 chase, hand CSK ruthless 5-wicket defeat at Chepauk

CSK vs PBKS, IPL 2026: A 210 target proved little challenge for Punjab Kings, who cruised home despite a late wobble, as CSK's struggles at Chepauk continued with another defeat.

Brief Scores: PBKS (210 for 5 in 18.4 overs) beat CSK (209 for 5 in 20 overs) by 5 wickets in Match No.7 of IPL 2026 in Chennai on Friday. CSK vs PBKS, IPL 2026: HIGHLIGHTS | SCORECARD

Punjab Kings made a 210 chase look like just another day at the office. Almost. A brief wobble in the closing stretch aside, there was little to suggest they ever felt the heat as they powered to a five-wicket win with eight balls to spare against Chennai Super Kings at the M.A. Chidambaram Stadium on Friday, April 3.

Priyansh Arya, who had yet to get going this season, offered a glimpse of what he is capable of. His stay lasted just 11 balls to score 39, but it was enough to leave a mark. Boundaries flowed freely from his bat, each one struck with intent, as he set the early tempo for the chase. At the other end, Prabhsimran Singh complemented him well, showing flashes of his best while ensuring there was no early damage.

That early burst ensured Punjab never really fell behind the asking rate, allowing them to dictate terms rather than chase the game. Even when Matt Henry provided a moment of respite for CSK by removing Arya, the momentum did not quite shift.

Cooper Connolly looked to build on his outing against the Gujarat Titans. He took his time to settle in, but just as he began to find his rhythm, a mix-up in the middle resulted in Prabhsimran’s dismissal. It was one of the few moments where Punjab threatened to lose control, but even then, there was no visible panic.

If there were any lingering doubts, Shreyas Iyer quickly put them to rest. Showing no signs of the injury he picked up in the previous game, he anchored the chase with a composed half-century that blended control with calculated aggression. His proficiency against spin stood out, especially the two sixes off Rahul Chahar, but he was just as comfortable against pace, rotating strike smartly and picking his moments.

Iyer’s presence in the middle meant Punjab were always a step ahead of the game. Having been struck on the hand in the previous outing, his fluency here will come as a significant boost for the side going forward.

The only phase where Punjab looked under any real pressure came when Iyer and Nehal Wadhera fell off successive deliveries to Anshul Kamboj and Matt Henry respectively. For a brief moment, there was some doubt.

But Punjab’s batting depth, something most teams would envy, ensured it never swung fully in CSK’s favour. With Marcus Stoinis and Shashank Singh walking out, and Marco Jansen still to come, the chase remained firmly within control.

If anything, it only reinforced how well-structured this batting unit is.

Is Chepauk no longer a fortress?

For Chennai, the loss at home is fast becoming a worrying pattern. This was their sixth straight defeat at the venue, and it unfolded in a manner that will raise further questions.

Ayush Mhatre was the standout with a boundary-laden 73 off 43 balls, an innings that gave CSK both momentum and hope. Shivam Dube provided the finishing push to end with 45 off 27 balls, ensuring they crossed the 200-mark, which was a par score at best.

From the bowling side of things for Punjab Kings, Yuzvendra Chahal, however, still looked class with the ball despite a touch of misfortune. He finished with figures of 1 for 21 in his three overs, but two dropped chances denied him the wicket of Mhatre. On another day, those moments could have altered the course of the innings and left CSK with a far more modest total.

That, perhaps, summed up CSK’s evening. Small moments slipping away, and with them, control of the game.

In their previous outing, it was the batters who did not turn up. This time, the bowlers failed to make an impact when it mattered most. Ruturaj Gaikwad will find himself under increasing pressure as results continue to go against them, and CSK will need a collective response quickly before the season begins to drift.

Sarfaraz Khan, meanwhile, has been one of the few consistent positives. His cameos have carried both intent and awareness, and he remains someone the side can rely on in difficult phases.

CSK’s problems are no longer isolated. With both bat and ball misfiring in turns, the cracks are beginning to show, and even Chepauk is starting to feel like unfamiliar territory.
