IPL 2026: RCB close in on playoffs, but revival-hungry KKR stand firmly in the way

RCB vs KKR, IPL 2026 Preview: RCB head into their clash against KKR sitting comfortably near the top of the table, but Virat Kohli's sudden dip in form and questions around Romario Shepherd have added fresh intrigue. KKR, meanwhile, are sweating over Varun Chakravarthy's fitness as their play-off push enters survival mode.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Kolkata Knight Riders head into Raipur carrying completely different pressures, but both teams know this clash could shape the rest of their IPL 2026 season.

RCB are sitting on top of the table with 14 points and another win would almost lock in a playoff spot while also keeping them firmly in the hunt for a top-two finish. KKR, meanwhile, are still stuck in eighth place with nine points from 10 matches, but four straight wins have suddenly pulled them back from the edge after what looked like a dead campaign not too long ago.

The timing of this match also makes it fascinating.

Raipur’s surface did not exactly scream batting paradise during the previous game. Even RCB struggled to chase 167 against Mumbai Indians, needing a cramp-fighting 73 from Krunal Pandya and a wild final-over six from Bhuvneshwar Kumar to somehow get over the line.

That sluggish pitch now awaits two teams whose biggest strengths are currently very different.

RCB still relies heavily on batting momentum and individual game-breakers. KKR, on the other hand, have rebuilt their entire season around strangling teams through spin and middle-over pressure.

And that immediately puts the spotlight on two men before the first ball is even bowled: Virat Kohli and Varun Chakravarthy.

WILL VIRAT KOHLI TURN HIS FATE AROUND?

For most of IPL 2026, Kohli looked locked into another classic Kohli season.

He scored 379 runs in his first 11 matches, stitched together nine straight double-digit scores and quietly became the stability behind RCB’s rise to the top of the table.

Then suddenly, the last two games happened.

Back-to-back ducks. Three balls faced combined. And now, for the first time this season, there is genuine noise around Kohli’s form heading into a massive fixture.

The interesting part though is that RCB have actually continued winning despite Kohli’s quiet patch. Earlier versions of Bengaluru often collapsed emotionally whenever Kohli failed. This season feels different.

Krunal Pandya dragged them through against MI. Devdutt Padikkal has chipped in consistently. Even Tim David and Rajat Patidar have had moments through the season.

Still, RCB know exactly what a locked-in Kohli changes in games like these.

KKR certainly do.

Assistant coach Shane Watson admitted before the game that Kolkata’s plans still revolve around getting Kohli early because once he settles, he completely controls the tempo of a match.

“Every team has plans against Virat Kohli because he’s one of the best players in the world. But the challenge is that he knows exactly how to counter those plans as well,” Watson said.

Raipur’s sticky pitch could make that opening battle even more important.

KKR’s spinners completely suffocated Delhi Capitals in the previous game at this venue, turning the middle overs into a complete survival exercise. Delhi went from 55/1 in the Powerplay to crawling through the middle phase before Ashutosh Sharma’s late hitting rescued them somewhat.

If Kohli survives the new ball, RCB’s innings instantly looks calmer. If KKR strike early, the pressure shifts straight back onto a middle order that has looked slightly shakier over the last couple of games.

The bigger concern for Bengaluru might actually be skipper Rajat Patidar. After a blazing start to the tournament, Patidar has managed only one fifty-plus score and one 20-plus score in his last six innings.

Against a spin-heavy KKR attack, RCB probably need one of Kohli or Patidar to produce a proper statement knock.

VARUN CHAKRAVARTHY'S ABSENCE MAKES KKR SWEAT

KKR’s entire revival has been built around their bowling attack rediscovering rhythm.

And no player has symbolised that turnaround more than Varun Chakravarthy.

After going wicketless in Kolkata’s first three matches of IPL 2026, the mystery spinner suddenly exploded back into form with 10 wickets in the next four games, including a match-winning spell against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

But ahead of the RCB clash, KKR have an uncomfortable worry hanging over them.

Varun was spotted wearing knee braces and using crutches after the win over Delhi Capitals, immediately raising concerns around his fitness before one of the biggest matches of their season.

Watson admitted the franchise is still hopeful but stopped short of giving a clear confirmation on his availability.

And honestly, KKR cannot really afford to lose him right now.

Because this bowling unit works best when Narine and Varun squeeze teams together through the middle overs. Add Anukul Roy’s resurgence and support from bowlers like Vaibhav Arora and Kartik Tyagi, and suddenly Kolkata have become one of the hardest bowling attacks to line up against.

The other interesting selection conversation remains around Matheesha Pathirana.

Despite being fit and available, the Sri Lankan quick still cannot break into KKR’s settled combination. Watson admitted Pathirana’s quality gives the squad depth, but Kolkata’s balance right now has made it difficult to squeeze him into the XI.

That itself probably explains how much confidence KKR currently have in their bowling group.

WILL RCB KEEP BACKING ROMARIO SHEPHERD?

One of the more awkward conversations around RCB right now revolves around Romario Shepherd.

The West Indian all-rounder has had moments this season, but there is growing concern around whether RCB can continue carrying his inconsistency into the playoffs phase.

Against Mumbai, Shepherd managed only 4 off 11 balls during a tense chase and almost dragged RCB into trouble before Bhuvneshwar Kumar’s late heroics bailed them out.

His struggles against spin are becoming increasingly visible too.

Earlier in the season against Lucknow Super Giants, Shepherd failed to finish a chase against Digvesh Rathi’s spin in the final overs. With KKR expected to throw Narine, Varun and Anukul at him in succession, this matchup could become very uncomfortable for RCB.

Even with the ball, Shepherd has leaked runs heavily despite picking up wickets. His economy rate is hovering close to 12 this season, making him one of the more expensive seamers in the tournament.

That naturally raises the Jordan Cox question again.

The English batter has spent most of IPL 2026 warming the bench despite arriving with strong T20 numbers and a reputation built through The Hundred. If RCB want more batting control against spin-heavy attacks, Cox could become a genuine option soon.

Whether Bengaluru make that call before the playoffs though remains the bigger question.

RCB VS KKR: PLAYOFF SCENARIOS

The equation is fairly simple for both teams now.

RCB are one win away from almost confirming playoff qualification. With a healthy net run-rate of +1.103, Bengaluru are also serious contenders for a top-two finish, something that could become massive during the knockout stage.

KKR’s path is far more stressful.

The defending champions sit on nine points from 10 matches and realistically need to win all four remaining games to stay properly alive in the playoff race. Reaching 17 points would almost certainly keep them in the top-four conversation.

A defeat in Raipur though would push Kolkata dangerously close to elimination territory again.

Which is why this game feels far bigger for KKR emotionally than it probably does for RCB.
