KKR vs MI Highlights, IPL 2026: Kolkata stay alive in playoffs race with 4-wicket win

KKR level it up against MI - It was MI who dominated the Knight Riders at the Wankhede earlier this season. But come this evening at the Eden Gardens, KKR have returned the favour on home soil. They stay at home as they prepare for their final league fixture against the Delhi Capitals, on Sunday, May 24th, a game that will also be the last of the league stage this season. They will know their fate by then. For the Mumbai Indians, they head back home to wrap their season with an aim to finish with a win and give their home crowd something to smile about. They play against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, 24th May, and it will be an afternoon game just before the KKR vs DC match. 

PLAYER OF THE MATCH - KKR's Manish Pandey receives the award for his brilliant 45 off 33 balls. Pandey says it feels really great to be a part of this setup, and KKR has been really nice and kind to him. Manish adds that he was looking to stay out in the middle till the end to see the side home, but he is really happy that the team got the points they were after at the end. Manish details that a couple of boundaries he hit off Deepak and Bumrah off his back foot were the ones that gave him a lot of confidence. Adds that it was important for him to feel like a part of the squad even though he was not featuring in the XI. Manish concludes by saying that his forte has been to contribute in whatever way he can, be it saving a single or a boundary or taking a regulation catch or a blinder, he just wants to make every ball count for the betterment of the side.

The captain of the Kolkata Knight Riders - Ajinkya Rahane says the belief within the Kolkata Knight Riders camp was always there, even after the first six matches of the season. Mentions that the side had some really good discussions after the first win, and from then on, the group began to believe more strongly. Rahane credits the positive atmosphere within the dressing room and says the preparation from the support staff has been fantastic throughout. Ajinkya reveals that once Cameron Green started bowling, they wanted Rovman Powell to get in, and he has made a lot of impact. Rahane also praises Anukul Roy and Kartik Tyagi, saying both have carried confidence from their domestic seasons and performed brilliantly for the side. He is particularly delighted for Manish Pandey as well, highlighting his work ethic and attitude despite not always being in the playing XI. The KKR skipper signs off by saying that the side wants to keep taking one game at a time, with staying in the moment working best for them.

KKR's bowlers outfox MI - A pitch well-suited for the KKR bowling attack made life difficult for Mumbai Indians from the outset. Cameron Green struck twice early to leave MI reeling, and though Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav offered brief resistance, MI's top four fell inside the Powerplay. A rain interruption did little to change Mumbai's fortunes as Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma struggled to get going in the middle overs, never finding the fluency to shift the momentum. The spin trio of Narine, Chakaravarthy, and Anukul were particularly impressive, conceding just 47 runs across 9 overs between them. MI never quite broke free, and while Bosch's late cameo pushed them close to the 150-run mark, it was a hugely collective bowling effort from KKR.

Pandey and Powell make it look easy - The target was never truly a source of anxiety for KKR, who simply needed one steady partnership to see them through the tricky middle phase, and they found exactly that through Powell and Pandey. The two allied for an untroubled 64-run stand that took the game firmly away from the Mumbai Indians. MI did try to claw their way back, picking up a couple of wickets to reduce KKR from 118/3 to 140/6, but by then the damage was well and truly done. With less than a run a ball needed and the groundwork laid beautifully, Rinku Singh strolled out and did what Rinku Singh does, hitting the winning runs in the end.

Ball dominating the bat - This was the case throughout the game. KKR began on similar lines as their opponents, as they lost Finn Allen inside the Powerplay, though they managed 51 runs through the restrictions. However, Rahane and Manish Pandey put together a steady alliance, navigating a new swinging ball with variable bounce against Chahar and Bumrah, before Rahane fell in the final over of the Powerplay. It was Bosch who made those inroads, eventually accounting for Cameron Green as well, reducing KKR to 54/3 at one stage.

Getting interesting in the final stretch - With three playoff spots already confirmed, the race for the fourth berth has just gotten a whole lot spicier. This win sees KKR leapfrog both DC and CSK to move to sixth on the table with 13 points, and they are now breathing down the neck of the Punjab Kings, who sit at a similar points tally.

KKR's power-hitter is up next - Rovman Powell, on the pitch and his batting plans, says that it was a typical Caribbean wicket, not a typical IPL surface where the ball slides onto the bat. He notes the ball was holding a bit and says he knew exactly how to bat on it. He explains that the idea was to target the shorter boundary and that it was far from a placid surface, with the ball gripping rather than coming on smoothly. On staying alive in the season despite the poor start, he says that is the beauty of the game. He stresses the need to keep focus on the last game of the league stage.

The captain of the Mumbai Indians - Hardik Pandya says it turned out to be quite an entertaining game. Feels MI were 20 runs short with the bat. He admits losing too many wickets in the Powerplay hurt them and feels that had he and Tilak Varma stayed together for longer, MI could have posted a much more competitive total. Pandya mentions that he does not mind surfaces like these, where bowlers have something to work with, especially in a season where batting-friendly pitches have often left bowlers helpless. He is also critical of the fielding effort, calling it quite poor and stressing that there is no hiding away from that. Hardik speaks about the next ESA game against the Rajasthan Royals on Sunday, where around 25,000 children will be at the stadium watching the game. He says the hope is to put smiles on their faces and create lifetime memories for them.

Knight Riders stay alive - How the tables have turned, eh? With not a single win in their first six games, everyone marked KKR out of the season, but here they are. Winning six of their last seven games, they have given themselves a real chance to make it through. Though it is still not very easy for them, this has been a fantastic comeback from the Knight Riders in the second half of the season. A contrasting picture for the Mumbai Indians, though. It simply has not been their season, this defeat making it nine losses this year, with a winning streak still eluding them throughout the campaign.

Ryan Rickelton calls for it and races to his left with gloves on. Deepak Chahar run in from the deep fine leg fence. Deepak doesn't call for it and Rickelton ends up clattering into Chahar but holds onto a good catch. Chahar seems to have injured his left knee and grimaces in pain.

MI review in the hope of overturning the wide call and they get it right. The UltraEdge confirms that the ball indeed went off the gloves and it lobbed past the keeper.

Well, well, well. MI have just made it a bit more interesting. There was a bit of mystery around the concussion sub for Angkrish Raghuvanshi. Initially, there were rumours of Ramandeep being the one. He was also seen padded up, according to the on-air commentators. But it is Tejasvi Singh who comes in to bat at number 7.

15.2: AM Ghazanfar to Rovman Powell, OUT! TAKEN! Corbin Bosch has pulled off a blinder. That seemed destined for a boundary. Dropped short by AM Ghazanfar, on off. Powell presses back and goes hard on the cut. He has no intention of keeping it on the ground and picks the bones out of it. Corbin Bosch reacts quickly at backward point to his right. He initially goes with both hands, but then sticks out the right hand to grab hold of the ball. It sticks in his grasp and the ball stays in even after his elbow hits the turf. Two new batters at the crease for KKR. Can MI conjure up something special?

Is that a fair catch by Bosch? The umpires have taken the review from their end and have asked Powell to wait, but he keeps walking away. Several replays come up and they are checking whether the ball is grounded. It is not with Bosch having his fingers underneath. 

15.1: AM Ghazanfar to Rovman Powell, SIX! Not quite from the middle but it does the job for Powell. Tossed up, full and outside off. Powell drops to a knee and he has a big swing at it. He does not quite get hold of it but got enough bat on it to clear the wide long on fence.

STRATEGIC BREAK​​​​​​! Bumrah has just picked up his fourth wicket this season, and has dismissed Manish Pandey for the first time in T20s. But it seems like too little too late for the Mumbai Indians at this stage as KKR need just 30 runs off the last 5 overs. The door is not completely shut, MI still have their toe in it, but KKR look well placed to hunt this down from here. Rinku Singh comes in at number 6.

Seam-up ball, on a nagging length, bowled from going wide on the crease. Pandey hangs back and is a bit tentative in defence. The ball jags back in off the surface to go through the yawning gap between the bat and the pad and hits the top of the middle stump. Pandey cannot quite see his side home. STRATEGIC BREAK! Despite losing three wickets, KKR are still in a very comfortable position. They are well ahead of the asking rate and another partnership is budding, between Powell and Manish Pandey. Yes, the ball has done the talking, but MI know that they aren't winning this without taking all ten KKR wickets. They will have to keep picking wickets regularly to give themselves a real chance. Harsha Bhogle mentions on air that there is no confirmation yet regarding a concussion substitute for Angkrish Raghuvanshi. So there is still a fair bit of uncertainty around the situation.

Well, well. A blow for the Kolkata Knight Riders before the chase has even begun. Angkrish Raghuvanshi will take no further part in the game, with Ramandeep Singh coming in as his concussion substitute. Possibly, that collision between Raghuvanshi and Varun Chakaravarthy while going for Varma's catch may have been the cause. AM Ghazanfar is MI's Impact Sub, replacing Rohit Sharma. A tricky test awaits - The tone was set by the way Saurabh Dubey and Cameron Green started off in the Powerplay, and the good work was carried forward brilliantly through the middle phase by Sunil Narine and Varun Chakaravarthy, with Varun turning up despite hobbling with a toe injury. This has been a tough wicket for the batters to line up the bowlers. Given the success enjoyed by the KKR spinners, expect AM Ghazanfar to come in as the Impact Sub for MI. With Raghu Sharma and Will Jacks also present, that could potentially mean 12 overs of spin for MI. Stick around for the chase.

Tough going for MI - Rain in the lead-up to the game made it a pretty straightforward decision for Ajinkya Rahane to insert the Mumbai Indians to bat. The sticky nature of the surface made stroke-making difficult, and MI, in their quest to make the most of the Powerplay, lost four wickets inside the first 6 overs. Tilak Varma and Hardik Pandya both found it tough against the spin duo of Varun Chakaravarthy and Sunil Narine. Although Tilak got a lifeline, he could not make the most of it, while Hardik was unable to make a significant contribution either. Will Jacks getting run out only added to MI's woes. However, Corbin Bosch came through to provide MI the late flourish.

Late bashing from Bosch - 32 runs off the last 2 overs and 52 off the final 4 have taken the Mumbai Indians to 147 and given them something to bowl at. The Kolkata Knight Riders would have taken this at the start of the game, but this is still going to be a tricky chase with their season on the line.

19.6: Kartik Tyagi to Deepak Chahar, OUT! CAUGHT! MI FINISH AT 147/8. Kartik rolls his fingers on the ball and takes all the pace off. Digs it in short and outside off. Deepak Chahar tries to sail the ball over point with an uppercut, but gets the timing all wrong and hence, there is no distance either. The ball goes straight towards Anukul Roy at deep point, who ain't dropping those straightforward chances. However, a very expensive final over as 19 runs come off it.

A glancing blow on the helmet for Corbin Bosch there. Not sure the physio initially picked up from the dugout that the ball had, in fact, brushed the helmet, and Bosch had to call him on for the concussion check.

19.3: Kartik Tyagi to Corbin Bosch, FOUR! Off the top edge, but runs are runs! Tyagi bowls at pace this time. Bends his back and bangs it short on the bodyline. Corbin Bosch is hurried while playing the pull shot and gets a thick top edge. The ball clinks his helmet and lobs over the short fine leg fielder for a boundary.

19.2: Kartik Tyagi to Corbin Bosch, SIX! MASSIVE STRIKE! Bosch is playing a blinder here. Slower ball, full and on middle. A real slot-ball by Tyagi and Bosch doesn't let it go unpunished. Gets the front leg out of the way and whips it over deep backward square leg for another biggie.

19.1: Kartik Tyagi to Corbin Bosch, SIX! Gets a good piece of wood on that! A half volley by Kartik, on middle and leg. Corbin Bosch plays the pick-up shot and by using his wrists, he manages to clear the deep square leg fence for a six.

18.5: Saurabh Dubey to Deepak Chahar, FOUR! It doesn't matter how the runs come at this stage for MI. Saurabh tries the wide yorker, but Chahar bends low, stretches his arms wide and takes it on the full. Opens the bat face and slices it to the right of the short third fielder for a boundary.

Deepak Chahar has gone upstairs for a review for wide not given. It is a fair delivery to begin with. And since Deepak didn't move across at the point of release of the ball, the wide guideline remains as it is. The front-on replay shows that there is some part of the ball inside that guideline. So the on-field decision is upheld.

18.2: Saurabh Dubey to Corbin Bosch, Bowls it much fuller, on off. Bosch plants the front leg across and goes for a sweep, but misses and the ball deflects off his pads to short fine leg for a leg bye.

Rinku collects the ball and throws it to the bowling end. Varun Chakaravarthy collects the throw beside the stump and whips the bails off with Jacks out by a fair margin. The replays confirm the same as well. The problems just keep multiplying for the men in blue as MI are reduced to 105/7.

STRATEGIC BREAK! The Mumbai Indians are in all sorts of trouble here. The KKR spinners have spun a web through this middle phase, and the MI batters have found it extremely difficult to read them. Mumbai will somehow need to get themselves to 140 from here, but they do not have much batting left in the shed. Corbin Bosch now joins Will Jacks, and it will have to be this pair to give MI something to work with.

15.2: Sunil Narine to Hardik Pandya, OUT! CLEANED HIM UP! The old fox continues to weave his magic and strikes, ending Hardik's misery. Narine lands it somewhere outside the off stump and gives a bit of flight on it. It pitches and zips prodigiously back into the batter, staying evidently low as well. Hardik is pinned in the crease and tries to cut it away, but is late on the shot and the ball skids, beating the inside edge, and flattening the middle stump. Mumbai Indians are in a deep hole now, with the score reading a sorry-looking 95/6.

A simple catching practice for him as Roy gathers it to his left, around the waist. Tilak Varma struggled for his 32-ball 20 and he walks back now. Mumbai Indians are 84/5.

9 pm IST (3.30 pm GMT) - More pleasing visuals coming from Eden Gardens as some of the KKR players have made their way out for the warm-ups. The stumps are erected as well in the middle. Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma can be seen in the MI dugout. We have an official update that the play will resume at 9.15 pm IST (3.45 pm GMT), with no overs lost.

8.52 pm IST (3.22 pm GMT) - The umpires have walked out in the middle and are indulging in a detailed conversation with the head of the ground staff. The covers are being gradually peeled off. Looks like the pitch has also been uncovered. The drainage is pretty good at this venue so the resumption is not that far if rain stays away.

8.45 pm IST (3.15 pm GMT) - The umpires are in conversation with the curator. There is no rain around, which is a pleasing thing. However, the mop-up and uncovering operation is yet to start. Some of the ground staff are out in the middle and appear to be taking the blocks off the covers, which were placed to prevent them from being blown away. And there it is. The covers are now coming off. Ajinkya Rahane has had a brief chat with the umpires before walking back to the dressing room, with the resumption time likely having been conveyed to both captains.

8.35 pm IST (3.05 pm GMT) - The match officials are out in the middle, engaged in discussions with the chief of the ground staff. Hardik Pandya is also waiting in the dugout, while the KKR players have also started gathering around their dugout. The covers are still firmly in place, though. The umpires are repeatedly looking up at the skies, not entirely sure how much can be made of that in the dark, but perhaps the radar has suggested there could still be a bit more weather around.

8.24 pm IST (2.54 pm GMT) - The rain seems to have eased, with the fourth umpire no longer needing the umbrella. The entire ground currently resembles an ice rink with it blanketed in white sheets. It could still be a little while before we resume, given the sheer amount of covers spread across the playing area.

8.16 pm IST (2.46 pm GMT) - Where has this come from? The heavens have suddenly opened up, and the players are sprinting off the park as the covers are rushed on by the ground staff. Harsha Bhogle mentions on air that this shower was expected on the radar, with more rain potentially on the way as well. The good thing, though, is that here in Kolkata the entire ground gets covered, and that is exactly what is happening at the moment.
