Opening night ends with a statement - That brings us to the end of the curtain-raiser of IPL 2026, where the defending champions, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, brushed aside the 2024 finalists Sunrisers Hyderabad in emphatic fashion. A statement win to kick things off, and they’ve well and truly set the tone for the season ahead. Up next, we have a blockbuster clash lined up as two heavyweights go head-to-head, with the Mumbai Indians taking on the Kolkata Knight Riders at the Wankhede Stadium on 29th March, Sunday. That one gets underway at 2 PM GMT (7.30 PM IST), and promises to be an absolute cracker. You can, of course, join us a little early for all the buildup, analysis, and team news. It’s goodbye for now and see you soon!
23:37 IST:
PLAYER OF THE THE MATCH - Jacob Duffy wins the award for his incredible spell of 3/22. He describes it as an awesome experience to make his IPL debut, adding that he had heard a lot of good things about Bengaluru and the Royal Challengers Bengaluru. Duffy shares that the new ball did a bit, and he feels lucky to be able to contribute to the team's effort. He jokingly mentions that he is just keeping Josh Hazlewood’s seat warm.  Jacob also cheekily adds that it was a bonus to be able to walk off after completing his four overs, thanks to the impact player rule. Duffy notes that it was a different kind of wicket, with more bounce than he has seen in India over the past couple of months. The Kiwi pacer admits that Bengaluru is not the easiest place for bowlers, but says he is learning on the run. Reckons that the best time to bowl was when the ball was hard and new.
23:43 IST:
Happy with the win - Rajat Patidar, the victorious skipper of Royal Challengers Bengaluru, says that the boys played really well. Adds that it was the opening game and Duffy was simply excellent with the ball, picking up the wickets of Head and Abhishek. Abhinandan Singh was also playing his first game and did well. Mentions that there are no words to describe Kohli, he is the number one batter while chasing and stayed there till the end. Further adds that Phil Salt was brilliant in the field, and it didn't surprise him to see him take such blinders. Ends by saying that he just tried to make as much impact as he could with the bat.

23:24 IST:
Time to hear from Virat Kohli - Kohli says it's good to be back playing T20 cricket again. He feels the way he batted lately in the ODI format has helped him carry the same momentum into this format. He adds that as long as he has his rhythm, things tend to fall into place, especially with the work he has put into his fitness. Virat also reflects on the workload over the last 15 years, admitting there is always a risk of burnout. He says the extra rest has helped him stay fresh, both mentally and physically, and return with the right mindset. VK emphasises that he doesn’t want to just hold onto his spot, but continue performing and contributing to the team. He also praises Devdutt Padikkal for an outstanding knock. Kohli mentions he initially planned to be aggressive in the powerplay, but seeing the way Padikkal was batting, he focused on rotating the strike and giving him more of the strike. Adds that, having seen Devdutt up close, he always knew the kind of skill he possessed, and is now pleased to see him applying it consistently
23:29 IST:
We need to be better with the ball - The skipper of Sunrisers Hyderabad, Ishan Kishan says the wicket played nicely, with the ball coming on well to the bat. He feels they need to be smart with their shot selection, but takes heart from the way the side recovered after losing early wickets. Kishan also praises the RCB batters for the way they played, especially Virat Kohli, adding that you need to get him out early because once he gets going, he becomes unstoppable. Ishan believes that mistakes are acceptable at this stage of the tournament, but admits they need to be better with the ball. He remains confident the team will come back stronger. On captaincy, he says he thoroughly enjoyed the experience.
23:27 IST:
Tough day out for SRH attack - Not much went right for Sunrisers Hyderabad with the ball as they looked short of ideas and were inconsistent with their lines and lengths throughout. They needed early wickets in the Powerplay and did get one through Jaydev Unadkat, but were then completely blown away by RCB's batting firepower. David Payne managed to pick up a couple of wickets, while Harsh Dubey chipped in with one, but none of the bowlers could keep things tight. It turned into a tough outing for Ishan Kishan, both as a skipper and behind the stumps, with plenty for SRH to reflect on.
23:28 IST:
Power meets precision - Earlier in the game, Sunrisers Hyderabad posted a strong total despite their explosive openers failing, thanks largely to a 97-run stand between skipper Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen, with Kishan leading the charge through a blistering 80 off 38 balls. Their dismissals at a crucial stage stalled the momentum slightly, though Aniket Verma’s quickfire 43 off 18 pushed SRH past 200, which still felt a touch under par on a batting-friendly surface. For Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Jacob Duffy starred on debut with an excellent 3/22, bowling his four overs on the trot, while Shepherd also picked up three wickets despite being expensive, and Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Abhinandan Singh, and Suyash Sharma chipped in with a wicket each.
23:12 IST:
RCB cruise home - Despite losing Phil Salt early, Royal Challengers Bengaluru were always in the driver’s seat, largely due to the way Devdutt Padikkal took control from the moment he walked in. He shifted gears instantly and made full use of the Powerplay, while Virat Kohli calmly anchored the innings at the other end. The duo stitched together a rapid 101-run stand that effectively broke the back of the chase. Padikkal smashed 61 off just 26 balls, and even after his departure, Rajat Patidar ensured there was no slowdown with a handy cameo. Kohli, meanwhile, held firm, bringing up his 64th IPL fifty before finishing things off in style, remaining unbeaten on 69 off 38.
23:14 IST:
Champions begin with a bang - A purely dominating performance from Royal Challengers Bengaluru, who have kicked off their title defence in incredible fashion, sending a strong statement to the rest of the league. They completely outplayed and outclassed Sunrisers Hyderabad in every department, showcasing authority right from the outset, and chased down 202 with a remarkable 26 balls to spare. It’s a perfect start at their home venue, especially after last season, when they stumbled early with three consecutive losses.
23:11 IST:
15.4: Harshal Patel to Virat Kohli, FOUR! That's it, Virat Kohli finishes the job! A six followed by a hat-trick of fours. RCB romp home on the opening night. This is banged in short by Harshal, outside off. Kohli waits for the ball to arrive. He hops and gets his hands high to get under the ball before playing the upper cut over the man at short third for a boundary.

RCB vs SRH Live: Dominating from RCB

What a dominant performance from RCB! They chase down 202 with 26 balls to spare, leaving no doubts about their superiority today. Bengaluru couldn’t have asked for a better start, especially on a day dedicated to paying tribute to the victims of last year’s Bengaluru stampede.

For Hyderabad, it’s a day for serious introspection, particularly in their bowling department, as RCB’s batters made full use of the excellent conditions. A comprehensive victory for the home side!

IPL live score today: RCB slow down

David Payne’s double-wicket over has slowed RCB’s momentum a bit, with just eight runs coming off the last two overs. But the home side needn’t be worried — they require only 32 runs off 36 balls, with the required run rate under a run-a-ball.

The Sunrisers know they need more wickets if they’re going to build any real pressure on RCB, but at this stage, the chase is firmly under control.

RCB vs SRH Live: Payne gives SRH some respite

That over will give the Sunrisers a bit of respite, but they’re still a long way from staging a comeback. Virat Kohli remains at the crease, and as long as he’s there, RCB can breathe easy.

After a disastrous first over where he leaked 18 runs, David Payne tightened things up in his second, conceding just two runs and picking up the key wickets of Rajat Patidar and Jitesh Sharma. SRH are trying to claw their way back, but RCB’s innings is still firmly in control!

But the question remains: can SRH stage a comeback from here? The pitch is perfect for batting, and there’s still plenty of work ahead for the Sunrisers if they want to defend 202. RCB are well set, but cricket is never over until the last ball!

What a moment of chaos in the field! A spliced collision, but Klaasen somehow holds onto it! Klaasen signals to Aniket Sharma that he didn’t hear the call. Luckily, Aniket’s hands didn’t make contact with Klaasen’s head as he went down — no harm done, but what drama!

... THE RUN CHASE ...
21:40 IST:
Looking ahead - RCB will feel they could have bowled better to Aniket Verma, but they won't be too hard on themselves. Jacob Duffy was the star of the show on his IPL debut, returning impressive figures of 3 for 22 from his four overs, while his new ball partner Bhuvneshwar Kumar also played his part. The ball has come on nicely to the bat, and they will back themselves to gun down the total. Back in a bit for the chase.
21:42 IST:
A quick word - Aniket Verma says that it is a good wicket and he is happy that they managed to score over 200 and hopefully can defend it as well. On his dismissal, he says that he was trying to take a single on the last ball, but got a bit too much of the bat and it carried to the fielder. Verma mentions that the new ball was swinging a bit and skidding through as well, and hopes that the bowlers can use it to their advantage. Ends by saying that he tried the reverse lap due to the field, also thinking Shepherd would bowl a wide yorker.
21:44 IST:
Kishan and Verma led the fightback - The 97-run stand was ended by a contentious catch from Phil Salt, with Klaasen walking off unhappily. From there, RCB chipped away at the wickets. However, Aniket Verma shone for SRH to ensure the wheels did not come off completely. With his ball-striking, he helped his side inch close to 200, and who knows, had he stayed till the end, 210 might well have been breached.
21:36 IST:
A tug of war for control - End of a rollercoaster of an innings, one that ebbed and flowed, with both teams trading blows. Sunrisers Hyderabad go past the psychological mark of 200 and will be happy with what they have ended up with. After opting to bowl first, it was Royal Challengers Bengaluru who landed the first blow in this bout, with Jacob Duffy making use of his height and the short ball to good effect. Reduced to 29/3, Ishan Kishan came up with the counter-punch and found company in the form of Heinrich Klaasen.

IPL score live: SunRisers post 201 for 9 in 20 overs

From 29 for 3, SunRisers Hyderabad have managed to post 201 for 9 in 20 overs.

But, will that be enough on this good batting pitch at M Chinnaswamy Stadium? 200 is the par score, but defending it would need a special effort. Without Pat Cummins, do SunRisers have it in them to defend this?

It needed a special knock from Ishan Kishan to lift them out of trouble. Jacob Duffy, on IPL debut, had jolted their top-order with wickets of Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma in the powerplay. But, Heinrich Klaasen and Ishan added 97 runs for the fourth wicket.

15.6: Abhinandan Singh to Ishan Kishan, OUT! CAUGHT! It had to take something special to dislodge Ishan Kishan and Phil Salt has pulled off a spectacular catch. It is just the opening night, and we already have a contender for the catch of the season. Abhinandan Singh will consider himself lucky here. This is a low full toss, outside off. Kishan tries to repeat the earlier six and opens the bat face to slice it behind point. Ends up hitting it square this time. Phil Salt sprints to his right from deep point, and while being at full tilt, he stretches his right hand out and holds onto it while sliding. He ensures that the ball stays away from the ground by sliding with the back of his hand on the ground. End of a top knock from the SRH skipper.

15.5: Abhinandan Singh to Ishan Kishan, SIX! Easy as you like! Abhinandan Singh looks to push it across the left-hander, full in length. Kishan crouches and extends his hands. He makes use of the angle by opening the bat face and clears the deep third fence for six more.

Romario Shepherd gets rid of the ball quickly but the ball goes well over the stumps. Kishan was in before the throw came in.

15.2: Abhinandan Singh to Aniket Verma, SIX! Clean as a whistle! At 136.4 kph, Singh bangs it in short but this sits up to be hit. It comes just above the waist for Verma, who stands tall and nails the pull over mid-wicket for half a dozen.

Strategic Break! The final five overs are coming up now and could well be the match-defining phase in this game. Royal Challengers Bengaluru have pulled things back with a couple of quick wickets, but as long as Ishan Kishan is out there, they cannot breathe easy. Sunrisers Hyderabad may have lost half their team, but they are still in a good position to push for a total near 200. However, for that to happen, skipper Kishan needs to stay till the end and the others will also have to chip in. Here is Abhinandan Singh to bowl after the break.

RCB vs SRH Live Score: Salil Arora disappoints on debut

Suyash Sharma strikes. He strikes with a half-tracker. 23-year-old Salil Arora lofts one straight into the hands of the deep midwicket fielder. He could have belted that anywhere into the stands, but he finds the fielder.

Salil is disappointed, knowing he could have done better. He didn't get into the right position to play that shot.

Neither does he get the elevation, nor is it wide enough to beat the fielder in the deep. RCB vs SRH Live: Salil Arora in at No. 6. Who is he?

Salil Arora is an explosive 23-year-old wicketkeeper-batter from Punjab who has quickly become a standout in the Indian domestic circuit. Born in Amritsar, he first made headlines with a stunning century on his First-Class debut in the 2024 Ranji Trophy.

However, it was his record-breaking performance in the 2025-26 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy that turned him into a household name; he smashed an unbeaten 125 off just 45 balls against Jharkhand. His ability to clear the ropes-hitting 28 sixes in that tournament-earned him a ?1.5 crore contract with Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in the 2026 IPL auction. Arora officially made his IPL debut today against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium.

RCB vs SRH Live: A terrific catch from Phil Salt

That was too close to call. Phil Salt takes a fine catch, positioning himself well in the long-on boundary. He was quite close to the boundary rope, and he also rolled after taking the catch.

The umpires needed the third umpire's help. It appeared from one angle that the boundary cushion moved when he took the catch. But, it was not.

In the end, Heinrich Klaasen, who made 31, had to walk off. He was not happy, but he accepted his fate.

A 97-run stand came to an end.

20:45 IST:
A timely breakthrough for RCB. Salil Arora walks out to bat on IPL debut.
20:45 IST:
13.1: Romario Shepherd to Heinrich Klaasen, OUT! CAUGHT! Phil Salt has somehow managed to hold on near the ropes. Romario Shepherd comes back into the attack and breaks the threatening 97-run stand. He lands this on a good length, on middle and leg. Heinrich Klaasen stays deep in his crease and looks to heave it towards deep mid-wicket. He does not get it from the middle of the bat, and the ball flies high in the air. Phil Salt, near the ropes, settles under the high ball and takes the catch. However, he loses his balance and rolls over, with his foot very close to the ropes. The third umpire is called in to check whether any part of his body touches the ropes or not. From one of the angles, it looks like the cushions just moved, but the third umpire, after watching a few different angles, deems that it is a fair catch. Klaasen looks a bit bemused but has to accept the decision in the end.
20:48 IST:
Taken at deep mid-wicket. Is it a clean effort from Phil Salt? Was any part of his body touching the boundary cushions? Heinrich Klaasen has been asked to wait. The third umpire requests a top angle from the director, but it’s not conclusive enough to make a decision. He eventually goes to the front-on angle and finds no movement of the boundary cushions. He rules it a clean catch. Klaasen is not pleased one bit as he makes his way back to the shed.

RCB vs SRH Live: Ishan and Klaasen switch gears, Krunal leaks 21

RCB vs SRH Live: A captain's knock from Ishan Kishan

A terrific knock this from Ishan Kishan. He got to his fifty in just 27 balls. And he launched into Suyash Sharma, hitting three boundaries against the leg-spinner.

The stand-in captain has led from the front wonderfully well. He released the pressure in the sixth over, smashing debutant Abhinandan Singh for 18 runs. Ishan hasn't looked back since. He has targetted every single bowler, but has played with a lot of sense and situational awareness.

The partnership between Ishan and Klaasen is giving SRH hope in the middle overs.

RCB vs SRH Live: RCB regain control through spin in middle overs

Suyash Sharma and Krunal Pandya have started well. They are not big turners of the ball, but both of them are accurate. Not the orthodox spinners, but they were effective in RCB's title-winning campaign last year.

Ishan Kishan and Heinrich Klaasen are playing this well. Keep in mind, they have debutant Salil Arora, big-hitting Aniket Varma and Harsh Dubey to bat next. So, they are not taking risks.

RCB vs SRH Live: Ishan Kishan counter-attacks, SRH 49/3 in powerplay

Ishan Kishan launched into Abhinandan Singh, the debutant, and collected 16 runs from it. His counter-attacking approach has taken SunRisers to a decent powerplay score - 49 for 3.

Jacob Duffy was the star of the powerplay for RCB. Replacing Josh Hazlewood, the New Zealand pacer hit the lengths that Hazlewood loves -- short and good length. Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma failed while trying to push the pedal while Nitish Kumar Reddy was undone by the extra bounce.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar bowled wonderfully well, complementing Duffy and not giving the SunRisers enough room to free their hands.

Abhishek Sharma falls early. The plan has worked out and the SRH opener goes for a wild pull and top edges one straight up in the air.
