WI vs SA T20 World Cup 2024, Super 8 Highlights: South Africa win by 3 wickets, qualify for semis

Right then, the two semifinalists from Group 2 are confirmed as South Africa and England make it through to the final four. There are still a couple of semifinal spots left in Group 1 and next up is probably the most anticipated clash of the tournament so far. It will be Australia taking on India at the Daren Sammy National Cricket Stadium in Gros Islet, St Lucia which will also be the penultimate match of the Super Eight stage. The victorious skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram is up for a quick chat. He says that such has been the course of the tournament for them where they have to dig deep to extract a victory and they are happy to have won those close games throughout. He says he is feeling relieved to get through to the semis but they wouldn't get relaxed just by this as they are aiming much higher. Adds that they bowled well to start with and assessed the condition well and restricted the Windies to a below-par total. Mentions that they will take the learnings from this game and do well in the coming games. Also says that they identified that the spin would be a trouble for them and they stuck to it and the surface helped them too. Says Kagiso Rabada bowling just two overs speaks volumes on how the surface was acting and they feel happy to have executed their plans to perfection. Closes by saying that they were looking to take the game on and act smartly looking at the conditions that were in front of them and they managed to do it successfully.

Rovman Powell, the captain of West Indies says that the credit must be given to the boys who fought till the end and it was with the bat that they lost the game. adds that the wicket wasn't easy to bat on and they just lost wickets in clusters in the middle phase which was decisive. Mentions that they wanted to give their all in the field and he is proud of the boys. Adds that looking on the outside, they aren't in the semis but they have gone from number 9 in the world to number 3 in the last year or so and it is now important to continue the good work and make their people proud. Ends by saying that the crowd and the support have been fantastic wherever they have played and it is good to see that the cricketing spirit hasn't died down in the Caribbean.

Tabraiz Shamsi is the Player of the Match for his stellar showing with the ball early on. He says that he was sweating at the end but it's been the theme of the tournament for them and they have been finding a way to win as a team no matter what the situation is. Adds that they had confidence in Marco and he delivered. Mentions that the fans like bigger wins but such victories of close margins are what gets a team going even more. Also says that the last time he played on this ground he went for a few but he had a good chat with the coaching staff and they helped him. Credits the other bowlers and says they set the tone up front and together as a unit they performed to their best level. Closes by saying it is always a one-sided love affair between rain, South Africa and chasing but luckily it did not hinder their progress today.

Earlier in the game, Aiden Markram won the toss and put West Indies into bat first on a track that looked to be offering something for everyone. Markram picked up something early on from the pitch and was very smart to use a lot of spin in the first 10 overs. Markram even bowled a four-over spell himself upfront and they managed to pick up early wickets as well. Then came the 81-run stand between Kyle Mayers and Roston Chase that got the hosts into a position of promise but with overs running out and the run rate not quite where they would have wanted it to be, the batters had to push. South Africa took advantage of this and kept pressing as the wickets started to tumble and restricted them to just 135 runs with Chase being the star with a well-compiled half-century. In reply, it was a stop-start chase with rain impeding play but South Africa managed to hit enough boundaries in the middle phase than allowed them to get over the line when things got tight.

Utter heartbreak for West Indies who have played some scintillating cricket throughout this tournament but have been undone tonight in a must-win game by an unbeaten Proteas side that was riding high on confidence. They needed wickets upfront and Andre Russell delivered in the second over of the chase, sending back both openers. They needed to find the same momentum after the rain break and Alzarri Joseph bowled an aggressive spell that brought wickets for the hosts. However, a couple of expensive overs from the spinner, especially that 20-run over from Gudakesh Motie completely shifted the momentum into the opposition's favor. They did rally back as Roston Chase bowled a lovely spell during a difficult phase and took them to the brink but it just wasn't enough.

Originally needing 135 runs for the win, South Africa started poorly as Reeza Hendricks got strangled down the leg side for a golden duck. In the next over, Quinton de Kock was caught out in the deep and then came the rain which halted play for a long while. The target was revised to 123 in 17 overs and the Proteas came out with positive intent. Aiden Markram and Tristan Stubbs started to find the fence but Markram was the aggressor and soon fell. Heinrich Klaasen then came in and added 35 quickfire runs along with Stubbs which seemed to have got them in a comfortable position but Klaasen too fell. David Miller looked patchy and was undone by Roston Chase and even Stubbs fell when the finishing line was in sight. However, Jansen and Rabada remained cool and finished off the game in style.

SOUTH AFRICA HAVE DONE IT! Marco Jansen, you beauty! And would you believe it? The two men who collided in the first innings at the boundary have now hit a couple of telling blows each to take South Africa into the semifinals of the T20 World Cup after a decade. The Proteas not only top Group 2 but remain unbeaten and have now picked up 7 wins on the trot. Massive heartbreak though for the home side West Indies who really pulled things back and gave themselves some hop but thee target was always a couple of big shots away and they simply didn't have enough runs on the board.

UPDATE - 8.51 am IST (3.21 am GMT) - The rain stopped a while back but there is no word yet on the restart and that is due to a puddle that formed inside the 30-yard circle. Also, we should be starting to lose overs now as well which is never a good sign. Let's hope that we do get a start time soon, stay tuned.

UPDATE - 8.29 am IST (2.59 am GMT) - There is some good news from the ground as the rain has stopped and the covers are starting to come off. The ground staff will now get going and hopefully, the ground can get ready soon for a restart. The drainage is pretty good at this venue and the umpires can be seen chatting with the ground staff as well. Stay tuned as we should have official word regarding the restart soon. Also, the latest the play can start to constitute a five-overs game is 10.08 am IST (4.38 am GMT) which is still more than an hour and a half away.

UPDATE - 8.18 am IST (2.48 am GMT) - It is still pouring down in Antigua and the pitch and the squares are all firmly under covers. However, the outfield will take a lot of water given the rain but hopefully, it subsides and we can get the ground ready for play again. There is a buffer of about 90 minutes before we start losing overs, so, the question of the game getting washed out is still a fair bit away. UPDATE - 8.01 am IST (2.31 am GMT) - Uh, oh! Just as Tristan Stubbs was walking out to bat, a sudden rain shower has arrived along with a sturdy breeze. The rain has gotten heavier and we might be in for a bit of a delay. It wouldn't be a do-or-die game for South Africa in a World Cup clash without some rain, would it? ... The Run Chase ...

The spinner from South Africa, Tabraiz Shamsi is up for a quick chat and says that it was nice to play against the home team in front of a packed crowd and he was happy to contribute today. Adds that there are no set patterns in their bowling attack and they take it as it goes. Mentions that the surface is decent and there is a bit of turn but the ball seems to be coming onto the bat nicely and hopefully, there is a bit of dew as well in the next half. Adds that he isn't sure about whether Marco Jansen is completely fine or not and hopes that they don't require him with the bat.

The bowling from South Africa was lethal. The bowlers were well-disciplined and kept on delivering on those nagging lines and lengths that troubled the batters throughout their innings. The spinners inflicted the most damage as the trio of Aiden Markram, Tabraiz Shamsi and Keshav Maharaj took 5 wickets for 79 in their 12 overs. Kagiso Rabada was introduced in the 18th over yet he managed to pick up a wicket as well. Marco Jansen took one too. The target isn't that big but it is a tricky one and with the assistance on offer for the spinners we can expect a close contest. We will be back with the chase in a while. 

After being asked to bat first, the batters of West Indies struggled to score freely and were pinned back to the wall with early blows. The side lost Shai Hope and Nicholas Pooran early on in the Powerplay. Roston Chase along with Kyle Mayers knitted a solid partnership of 81 runs for the third wicket and laid a perfect platform for the batters down the the order. The side though lost its way post-drinks as they lost 8 wickets and added just 66 runs in the last 10 overs. Andre Russell looked in the mood to go big in the last few overs but a rash decision to take on the arm of Anrich Nortje cut short his innings on 15. Roston Chase was the top scorer for the hosts as he scored 52 while Kyle Mayers also played a handy knock of 35. Alzarri Joseph added a crucial 11 runs as well. 

South Africa have restricted the hard-hitting West Indies side to 135 in a game with a spot in the semis is at stake. The hosts looked good till the drinks break but they failed to shift gears in the middle phase.

Aiden Markram is the man who took the catch and the third umpire is having a look at it by zooming in. Fingers clearly under the ball and OUT comes up on the screen.

OUCH! That must've hurt. A collision between Marco Jansen and Kagiso Rabada as they both go for the same catch towards the boundary down the ground. Marco Jansen looks to have come out worse from this collision. The players are being treated by the medical staff of South Africa. Both the fielders had their eyes set on the ball and a lack of communication has caused such an incident. Ryan Rickelton has taken the field replacing Marco Jansen and let's hope it isn't that serious. 

7.5: Aiden Markram to Kyle Mayers, SIX! Oh, dear! That could be a very nasty collision! Neither Marco Jansen nor Kagiso Rabada quite called for the catch and have ended up barging into each other on the edge of the straight boundary and Jansen seems to have come out way worse than KG who is back on his feet. This was floated up full and on middle, Kyle Mayers got under it and lifted it straight back over the bowler's head. Both fielders from long off and long on ran towards it and neither stepped on the brakes and ended up colliding as the ball just sailed over for a six.

The skipper of West Indies, Rovman Powell says they were looking to bowl as well but this allows the batters to bat well and post a good total on board. Adds that he is backing his side to adapt to the conditions here and perform well today Informs that they have one change as Kyle Mayers replaces Johnson Charles. 

The skipper of South Africa, Aiden Markram says that they will bowl first and hopes that the wicket will get better later on and want to make use of the early conditions. Adds that they have been playing decent cricket and hope to play enough good cricket to get through tonight. Mentions that there is a strong breeze but it is generally a good batting wicket and informs that Tabraiz Shamsi is back in for Ottneil Baartman.
