West Indies vs England, 3rd ODI: Highlights from Barbados

And with that, the curtains come down on this series. Shai Hope collects the trophy and then joins his teammates for the celebratory pictures. All smiles in the West Indies camp as they savour the victory. But the England tour of the West Indies is far from over. The attention now shifts to the upcoming T20I series, with the five-match contest set to kick off right here in Bridgetown, Barbados. The skipper of West Indies, Shai Hope says that they were disciplined and to be an elite team, it is important that you do it consistently. Shares that his players are doing a lot of work off the field and they are reaping the rewards. Feels that this series showed that when they are challenged, they have the ability to fight back. Tells that he is really happy with the way the batting unit performed and appreciates the bowlers for their efforts.

Matthew Forde is the PLAYER OF THE SERIES for 8 wickets in the series and a great knock with the bat in the second ODI. He says he was really surprised to bag this award. Talks about his variations with the ball and says it was about keeping it on that good length and with assistance from the wicket he just had to keep things tight. Talks about the collective team effort and mentions that they respect the opinions of one another and the brotherhood is really strong.

The captain of England, Liam Livingstone says that they fought back really well and that the boys batted really well at the end. Tells that it was a disappointing end to the series but there were a lot of positives for them in this series. Mentions that some of the young boys would have learned lessons of gold from the first trip. Adds that they were missing a lot of important players in this series. Ends by saying that it was a massive honour to lead the country and he loved captaining the side.

Brandon King is the PLAYER OF THE MATCH for his superb ton. He says he has been getting starts but hasn't been able to capitalize but this came at the right time. Adds that he trusts his ability and sticks to the process. Appreciates Keacy and says he was fluent from the outset and helped him well in the middle. Talks about his catch and says the momentum was taking him outside the rope and luckily Alzarri was there to support and concludes that this has been one of his best knocks.

Earlier in the game, Shai Hope followed the trend at this venue and opted to chase. The drama unfolded as soon as Alzarri Joseph was introduced into the attack. Seemingly frustrated with a field setup disagreement, Joseph stormed off the field after taking a wicket in his first over. Romario Shepherd stepped in, striking twice in his opening spell to leave the tourists reeling at 24/4. Phil Salt then anchored England’s recovery with two crucial 70-run partnerships, first with Sam Curran and then with Dan Mousley. Though Salt and Mousley couldn’t provide the finishing touches, Overton and Archer unleashed an aggressive burst in the final overs to propel England to 263. For West Indies, Matthew Forde was the pick of the bowlers with figures of 3 for 35 from his 10 overs, including a maiden. Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd chipped in with 2 wickets each while Roston Chase had a solitary wicket to his name.

The West Indian chase began promisingly, aided by an English new-ball attack that struggled to find its rhythm early on. Although Jamie Overton’s introduction brought a breakthrough, it didn’t do much to stem the flow of runs. King looked as assured as ever, while Carty grew in confidence as the innings progressed. Soon, both batters were matching each other shot for shot, and the game quickly turned into one-way traffic. Both batters reached centuries during their 209-run stand, with Carty's being a maiden ODI hundred, making it even more special. King couldn’t stay until the end, but Carty, along with captain Shai Hope, guided West Indies home with 7 overs to spare.

An emphatic victory for the West Indies as they clinch the series in style! Chasing 264 turned out to be a stroll in the park for the hosts. Beyond just a series win, this triumph also brings crucial points in the race for direct qualification to the 2027 ODI World Cup. Despite the series loss, it hasn’t been all doom and gloom for the visitors. With as many as four players making their ODI debuts, they lacked experience but will take away valuable lessons from this series.

With the momentum now firmly on their side, England head into the defence of a very respectable 263, quite a turnaround on a ground notorious for tough defences! They’ll still need sharp, disciplined bowling from the outset to keep West Indies under pressure and make early inroads. For the hosts, it’s all about starting strong. A solid foundation from the top order will be crucial to chasing this total down, allowing them to take control and avoid any mid-innings drama. We’re all set for a gripping second innings!

Phil Salt is in for a chat. He says that as a team, they are happy where they are at in the game. Shares that he would have loved to get a three-figure score. Undeterred, Phil Salt continued to bat with caution and notched up a well-deserved half-century. The defining blow came with the prized wicket of England’s captain, Liam Livingstone, fresh off a century in the previous game. Romario Shepherd’s delivery found its mark, sending Livingstone back to the pavilion and leaving England in dire straits at 24/4 just around the 10-over mark. Struggling to find any momentum, England seemed on the brink, until Sam Curran stepped in with resolve. Curran’s steady presence alongside Phil Salt offered a glimmer of hope, as the pair set about stabilizing the innings. With a few confident strokes to break the tension, Curran and Salt managed to craft a crucial 70-run partnership that gave England a foothold in the game. However, their hard work was disrupted when Roston Chase claimed Curran’s wicket, setting England back once more and forcing them to start from scratch.

After winning the toss and, unsurprisingly, choosing to bowl first, Shai Hope and West Indies couldn’t have scripted a better start. Matthew Forde led the charge with early aggression, striking in the third over to dismiss Will Jacks and ignite the pressure on England. The pacers maintained impeccable lines and lengths, reeling in two more quick wickets, one for Alzarri Joseph and another for Romario Shepherd, putting England firmly on the back foot.

What an unexpected twist to the innings! Just when it seemed England’s scoring had stalled, Jofra Archer delivered a breathtaking cameo, smashing 38 off just 17 balls to propel England to a competitive 263/8. We are moments away from the first ball in this series decider, but before that, the match officials, the two sets of players, and their mascots will line up for the national anthems. First up will be the national anthem of Barbados, followed by England’s and then the anthem of the West Indies.

Jacob Bethell is also down for a chat. He says he is very proud of the way he played in the previous game and hopes to continue. Adds that he is very excited to be a part of this series decider. Talks about Liam Livingstone and says there wasn't too much talk and Liam just came out and put the pressure back on the bowlers straightaway. Concludes that Sam Curran played his role in the previous game and hopes for both of them to help Livingstone this time around. 

PITCH REPORT - Nikhil Uttamchandani is near the deck. He starts by saying that there is a 3-metre difference between the square boundaries with 64 metres to one side and 61 to the other. Adds that it is 73 metres down the ground. Feels that wind will be a factor that batters will have to take into account while clearing the boundaries. Informs that out of the 11 ODIs played here since 2020, 9 of them have been won by the chasing side. Carlos Brathwaite joins him and says that batters should look to hit straight. From a bowler's perspective, he feels that they should force the batters to hit towards the longer of the two square boundaries and use the wind to their advantage.

Shimron Hetmyer is down for a quick chat. He says he has stopped overthinking about his game and has started to enjoy it, which is showing in the way he is playing. He talks about one outing here five years ago, where he scored a century against England. Adds he was really young in the squad, which now brings a lot of fond memories, and it's very special to play against England at Barbados.

The captain of England, Liam Livingstone says that they would have bowled first as well. Adds that this is a ground that heavily favours the chasing side and therefore, they would have loved to chase. Mentions that they will see what the pitch has to offer and hopes that the game goes well for them. Feels that they will need to assess the conditions quickly and take it from there. Informs that they have made two changes - Reece Topley and Jamie Overton are in for Saqib Mahmood and John Turner. Shares that they want to play an attacking brand of cricket and put the opposition under pressure.

Shai Hope, the skipper of West Indies says they aren't quite sure of how the pitch will play like and want to chase. Adds that they will have to assess the conditions quickly and play really well. States that they have two changes with Shamar Joseph and Jayden Seales missing out and Alzarri Joseph and Romario Shepherd coming in.
